Warm up - Warm down
« on: November 05, 2009, 10:53:33 pm »
Whats the best amount of time to have the car running on these cold mornings before you use the turbo? Do you warm up on tick over OR Drive off limiting the revs for a few miles?

ALSO

How long do you let your car warm down after a good run before switch off?

I heard your not meant to warm up, as in leave running at standstill fuel injected cars as there is no need - you should get in and drive it taking it easy on the higher revs until warm.

Warm up by driving sensibly until about 2 mins after the water temp has normalised. Warm down - drive in D for the last couple of minutes and try to keep the revs below 2.5k.  :happy2:

I keep the revs  below 2000 rpm (gear change at 2k) when warming up and down. Avoids the turbo kicking in.

As above, drive normally rather than idling. When cooling, I drive as mentioned for the last mile or two before arriving home and then take another minute when idle (use the time to shut things off and make sure I've got everything before I leave the car).

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

I usually wait for the revs to get back down to normal after a cold start when it idles at like 2k-2.5k before i set off and obviosuly then do the above

Do your cars have an oil temperature gage built into the DIS?

I use this to judge when my car is warmed up before I start opening it up at all.  Until then I keep the reves below 3k rpm and do not drive the car on boost.  It usuall takes up to 10 minutes for the oil to get up to temperature, especially on a cold day.

Regarding warm downs - I always drive the car off boost for the last couple of miles of my journey and then leave her to idle for about a minute when parked up.  Again the oil temperature gage is useful here as I can see when the oil temp has dropped down to a nice level.

Our GTI's dont have a oil temp but if i remember rightly TT said the water temp gauge is designed or timed to reach warmed up temps at the same time as the oil. Apart from when its cold. You should not use the water temp gauge at this time of year to assume the oil is warmed up.  :happy2:

I think VCDS might let you do this.  I'll have a search.

Well on my S3 and on my A3 previously I can say that the water gauge warms up a good few minutes before the oil gauge does in hot or cold weather.

Oil temp you can see using VCDS, it follows water temp but just a touch behind.  so once water temp is up, give it a minute or so and oil wil be about right for some stick

Its around 3-5 mins of normal driving to reach temp depending on the speed your doing from how early. If you start your journe at higher average speeds i expect your temp will rise quicker.

Not supposed to let your car warm up while stood still, the oil doesnt move around enough to fully lubricate the engine so if you hammer it instantly from 5 mins of standstill it will be just as bad as not doing it at all.

i thought the reason the revs lift slightly when you start from cold was to insure the oil gets round the engine correctly , i dont touch it till the revs have dropped back down
Always leave it to cool too to enable the oil to cool/ lubricate the turbo before swithing off
