Rns510 connecting to highline (mfd)

Hi new to forum so was hoping someone could point me in right direction.
Recently bought a ed30 gti, it has the rns 510 sat nav unit but nothing appears on my highline ive tried having the car coded by vw and a specialist but cant seem to connect them up using vagcom.
After doing some digging around on net i can only put it down to my can gateway being out of date, ive read about battery drain also and since buying car i have had the battery replaced but i have left the car for 3 days before and has started up fine so dont think im getting that. I'll be taking car back to specialist on thursday so will get can gateway part no.
If someone could point me in right direction that would be great cheers!

Have you told the RNS unit to talk to the Highline display? Specifically, I would look at navigation, byte 7, bit 7, and untick BAP.

Don't forget to reboot the RNS unit when finished. All three buttons at the same time [Left Arrow < Right Arrow > and Star button. In fact you could try that right now just in case it's been forgotten.

Well I'm using a F revision gateway with my 510 and have no issue with mfd display including compass so that not your problem.

The only coding needed for the cluster to work is just turning off the BAP protocol. Then, as said before, reboot the RNS-510.
To finish the coding you just need to add Navigation in the Gateway installation list and code the RNS-510 according to your car's hardware in the Long Coding Helper, that is pretty simple to use with some tips from online DIY.
Cheers

If your Golf is not from 2008 most likely your CAN needs to be upgraded if you wish to install the newer firmwares available. The older firmwares don't drain the battery but they don't have the new functions and screen layouts.
There's also a firmware fix that works on some RNS-510 to avoid the need for a CAN upgrade.
Cheers

Mines a 07reg and I'm guessing the guy who put it in just did the unit and coded as much as possible without too much knowledge, so I'm guessing ill need to upgrade the can gateway then?

You can check the part number of your CAN gateway by looking at it under the dash or by using a VCDS cable.
Here's a DIY for retrofitting a RNS-510 that shows how you can replace your CAN:
http://www.myturbodiesel.com/wiki/rns510-rns315-gps-or-rcd510-installation-in-a-mk5-vw/
My car is from Nov/2008 and has a CAN with the part number 1K0 907 530 Q, so I was lucky to not need to upgrade it.
Here you can check from the list which CAN are compatible:
http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Navigation_System_(RNS510)_Retrofitting
I advise to upgrade if yours isn't compatible. You'll have more peace of mind about the battery draining issue.
Cheers

None of which should have any bearing on the RNS unit communicating with the Highline display. The CAN gateway will cause the battery drain issue perhaps, but that isn't a problem right now.

also worth checking the firmware
Some modified firmware can cause no communication with the highline, even if all is coded correctly
