Right guys, i've been on here a while but got a few bits to put up now so thought I'd finally start a build thread. Bought myself a MK5 GTI in November 2013 because insurance became affordable (although still not cheap).





Info about the car:

Steel grey (took me ages to decide which colour I wanted)

I originally budgeted £5500 but ended up spending £6450 when I realised how much car I could get for my money if I spent a bit more, I bought it with the intention of just giving it some TLC and putting some aftermarket 18" wheels and new tyres on and leaving it for a while to let my bank balance recover. but that's never the way these things end up.

 

Ended up getting some KW's for a good price, although the car had a decent history for peace of mind I had my mechanic replace all the fluids, filters, wipers and a quite a few other bits that needed some attention.



Ended up being quite a big bill but there were more things than I originally thought that needed doing and the car ran like a dream afterwards and has done for the last 10,000 miles so was well worth it. Whilst the car was at the mechanics I went and bought these ready to put on it when I picked it up:





So finally the day comes when all the work is done and I get to actually get to start driving the car on the road. Straight away I knew I'd bought the perfect car for me I loved everything about it. So I got cracking with the mods.









I had these on the car for a few weeks but the offset wasn't quite right and they didn't look as good as I had originally hoped that they would so I sold them and borrowed these to try on for a bit:





Again they were ok but didn't really do it for me, but from the mistakes I'd made i realised that I definitely wanted 19" wheels and that a diamond cut finish worked very well with the colour of the car and the red brakes. I knew I wanted to do something different and after plenty of research (and my own mistake) I had a very good idea what offsets and widths would fit properly this time so after a few weeks of searching I decided to take a punt on these:







I saw a few other golfs with Mercedes wheels on and I quite liked the style but had never seen these particular ones done before so I thought f*ck it why not and I LOVE them, they might not be to everybody's taste but for me they are bang on.









I finally found the wheels I was happy with so I decided I would stop modifying for a bit and earn more money than I spend for a couple of months. That lasted for about a week until I decided I wanted an intake and a remap, so after some research I decided I wanted a Forge Twintake because I liked the look and they weren't too loud also I know Forge products are well made. so I bought it and fitted it one Saturday afternoon:





Love the sounds and the looks of the twintake, downsides are its quite expensive and there's a lot of parts to it. If I had to do it again I would have gone for the ceramic Revo intake (which i'll probably be changing to shortly). Then it was time to take the car to Stealth Racing in Southam for a live remap, I doubt many of you have heard of them but they do a lot of engine conversions/ VR6 turbo builds ect so they know their cars inside out. The car was actually down on power 185BHP and 190LB/f because of a torn DV luckily I had a new REV D sitting in my glovebox and they fitted it FOC for me and did another run, all looked well with no faults or leaks so they set to work. An hour or so later the car made 261BHP and 290LB/f which I was very happy with (que arguments about how the dyno is gay and the number are wong) whatever the exact figures are I got in the car and the butt dyno told me that the car had been transformed, power came in hard and kept going all the way to 7000+ rpm. Only problem was stopping the car, I knew immediately that I needed a brake upgrade.



I bought some R32 brakes off here for a decent price and then got some new grooved and dimpled discs/ basic mintex pads and some HEL braided hoses. The R32 might be a heavy setup but its a world of difference over the standard 312mm's. Got a few pictures of the smaller mods inc. the brakes, lots of the little tidy up bits and pieces to just make the car cleaner I always find its the little details that really make the car.























New gearknob, pressed plate, new rear badge, new grab handles and window switches, 911 coolant and black washer fluid caps, button blank stickers, seat inserts, LED lights (in and out).

Cheers, in these photos I think the back is basically all the way down, and the front has about 20mm more to go down.

Put it all together myself with some research and the help of DaveB over the last couple of months, Alex at AKS supplied the brackets to fit the calipers to the TTS discs.

With fitting its basically £1000 but I think when you consider everything is brand new and with the weight saving over the R32 setup, they're very good and look awesome. For an equivalent new kit you'd pay like £1500 its a good price.
