Plastidipped wheels care and cleaning
« on: December 27, 2014, 10:26:24 pm »
Hi all! Happy xmas and 2015!

Got merry with the plastidip and got a stealthy set of ed35 black alloys.

Look ace after 4 cans and some time n elbow grease. How best to make it keep its finish good for long as possible and how to wash it safely? No jet washing i presume?

Many thanks

Definitely do not use pressure....my front end bits always peeled. Got tired of redo-ing them. I just painted my wheels due to lack of confidence in plasti-dip. I would say use a diluted pressure washer cleaner in a spray bottle to pre-soak the wheels and gently rinse.

Hi m8. You can jet wash them. But just keep it back a bit. Use non acid shampoo and the autoglym rubber and vinyl care after that. Every 4 weeks or sooner. Thats what i do with my car that has been plastidipped.

Ah right. I think pressure wash is totally out the question.

Fitting them thismorning i had to redo 2 areas where it peeled of while handling the wheels. Gotta be so darn careful im thinking its going to be tough to keep them good. And at 10 plus a can its a bit of a false economy long term :P

These 2 bits always peeled with 3 coats...

even with being careful of the nozzle distance of my washer. That being said, I believe with wheels one should cover both inside and out with plasti-dip to eliminate any ends or edges of the product other than at the outer rim. Also...it has been said to use 5 coats on wheels. You still need to be careful because if anything contacts or grabs onto the surface...it will peel.
My newly self-painted wheels however... :drinking:
I used flat blk. engine (high-temp and fluid resistant) paint that was 1/3 the cost of p-dip, but you cannot peel it off if one should change their mind.
I would just need to respray.  :happy2:

Thanks a lot! Will tread/drive carefully and see how long it lasts.

Paint may be on the cards sooner or later. Definitely bored of bright silver coloured wheels.

I did 1 can a wheel. Its Hyperlex German stuff 450ml cans.

Not worth shelling out another £50 for 4 cans imo. Rather paint them for that money!  :signLOL:

That was my thoughts, exactly, when I decided paint was the way to go. Luckily I had the experience of the peeling and wanted no part of it. Plus, it's not like I was ever going to change my mind on the color.  :drinking:

Well i guess plastidip is a good reversible way to test how a colour looks on your car before you get it permanently in paint.

On a lesser note I kerbed my wheel today and I wanted to cry! Plastidip lost vs the kerb. Came home and sprayed the areas over in plastidip n felt a bit better. pretty well hidden but you can see the corners of the peel area up close. I should use my self parking system more lol. In fairness wasnt used to how much the wheels stick out.
