Metallic rasp / rattle between 3500-4500rpm *Video Added*
« on: October 02, 2014, 03:49:36 pm »
Just wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what this could be.

Getting a loud heavy metallic rasp, which rises with the revs between 3500-4500. Would remind you slightly of an E46 M3. Happens in every gear, on rising and lowering revs, foot flat down, or revving lightly. Has been fairly quiet before now, but got a lot worse in the last few weeks.

I've had look for loose heat shields and can't find anything, though this may be different when the revs are up.

Car's driving 100%. Not heavy oil use, smoke, etc. Just this horrendous noise.

I've had a look around online, and can't find any definitive answers. Have heard of actuators/wastegates giving bother on mk6 GTIs between 1800-3000rpm.

Car is an 05 GTI DSG. Revo stage 1 engine and gearbox maps.

Any info / things to look out for would be great.

It'll be my guess too, or heat shield, check all the fixings. :happy2:

As said, I've had a dig about, tightened as many heatshield bolts as I could get at, and can't find anywhere which is fouling. All things heat shields / exhaust appear tight, though this may be different under revs when.

My guess is that its more mechanical, seeing that it only ever happens between 3500-4500rpm, then disappears. On or off boost, in any gear or neutral.

Starting to think timing chain, but its no louder on tick over than any other GTI I've heard, which is the usual sign of this.

You got a cold air intake fitted? If so take it off and fit standard airbox, see if that cures it

Sounds like a turbo issue.

Have you check the turbo heat shield?

If it were the turbo youd have other problems too... ie no boost or lots of smoke

Yeah, checked last night. As said, it appears tight but things may change under revs.

Cheers for your input folks.

Solved!

Sourced to a broken weld on the heatshield just off the turbo. Was still sitting flush, so very hard to notice until the revs come on. Espicially when your lying on the ground underneath it on axle stands.

Thanks everyone for your input.

Hopefully this helps someone in the future.
