Ah so that could cause the delay in where the unit thinks I am?

Right need to find someone with VCDS up on Merseyside!

The sat nav uses the cars various systems and sensors to assist gps reckoning. If the car and the nav aren't talking to each other then there's no correction between where the nav thinks it is and where the car knows it's going.

Just out of interest as this is on my list of things to do (when I get a car) how much was the head unit and associated kit, where did you get it from and how long did it take to install.  Cheers

Head units range from £300 for really old cronky stuff up to £700 for mint DAB versions. Associated kit (I guess you mean GPS and aerial adapter) about £12 - £15. Fitting is half an hour plus coding with VCDS etc.

If you keep an eye on the sales section here there's usually one for sale (inc. fitting...)  :wink:

Hey mate...
I paid :

£440 for a mint RNS510 (version P) LED unit which included antenna
£3 for trim removal tools
£6 for aerial adaptor
You might also need a new CAN gateway depending on the year of your car. Mine is an 07 so didn't need one. Pre 07 needs one to avoid battery drain.


Took me about an hour to install. Took me longer than it should have cos I was being overly cautious with the trim as I didnt want to snap any tabs prying it off.

I have yet to get my unit coded in with VCDS though.

Thanks guys. Need bluetooth for work and ipod connection just because I like it but want to use vw setup rather than aftermarket so tbis sounds just the job.

You'll also need a Bluetooth kit then, and an MDI kit for ipod connection. They don't come as features of the RNS510.
