Cam Follower / DV / PCV

Hi all,

New owner here! April 2005 5 door GTI DSG with 88k on clock. Bought it on Saturday, by Sunday I had a Lambda Sensor Engine Warning Light, so I'm determined to get the preventative stuff done asap!

So, any advice on:

Cam Follower replacement - should I just get OEM part and if so any links to where I can buy? Do I need a gasket too?

PCV - I've seen delete kits - what does this do and is it advisable? Possibly go for a Stage 1 / 2 in future but will be a long way off (at least 12 months / 10k)

DV - any well-priced, decent DVs out there?

Anything else I should think about getting looked at? Cambelt has been done AFAIK.

Cam Follower replacement: 06D 109 309 C + WHT 005 184 (O-ring).
PCV: change only if you have trouble (rough idle, nasty smell, etc) - uprated version (revision N) or PCV revamp.
DV: revision G.

As part of the engine light I also got a rough idle, and now you come to mention it, I think I got a sort of eggy fumes smell... is that it? I thought it may have been one of those country smells!  :wink:

That is a definite for the PCV revamp then - going to head down to Streetwise today to pick one of those up...

The eggy smells is your cat converter, probably over fuelling because of your lambda fault.

PCV update kit - http://www.psituning.com/product.php/21395/oem_pcv_breather_update_kit___2_0tfsi

The PCV delete kits remove the one way valve from the front breather, which often lets go when the engine is mapped (more pressure than it was designed to resist) and oil blows out of the oil cap and / or rocker gasket.  And you lose boost pressure.

Get your registration checked at your dealer for any recalls (coil packs) and powertrain warranty work (cam chain / tensioner).   Whilst you're there, get them to check for rusty wings and sills.   They are well versed in this and will do an on the spot check (inc paint depth) and raise a warranty job if it needs doing.

DV - Two choices.  Revision G = uprated version of the original rubber diaphragm design.  Revision D = Plastic piston.  Both available from dealers for £40ish.

Some say revision D leaks (by design, apparently) and some say the rubber diaphragms split.

If you're into preventive maintenance (as I am), then you'll want to get the cam chain checked / replaced (if VAG have no record of replacing it already).   The symptom is a diesel sound at tickover, which is clearly audible inside the car with the windows up.   You will also get "Cam / Crank sensor - incorrect correlation error" in the fault codes when it's severely worn.

The parts come to £550 ish and it's a good 4-5 hours labour on top.  Specialist tools to do it yourself are about £100.

It's probably the only expensive thing you'll ever do to a TFSI engine, aside from clutch / DMF replacement but it's worth doing if you want to keep the car for a long time.

No worries.  I would recommend a VAG-COM lead as your first purchase and download VCDS onto your laptop.  A really invaluable tool to help with troubleshooting.

As with all cars and their associated forums, a lot of problems are exaggerated.  Chain failure is not common on these engines, but for peace of mind it's worth doing some periodic checks, as you are doing with the cam follower.

The same golden rule applies - Regular oil changes = a longer lifespan!   A good oil every 5K and a check of the cam follower every 2nd oil change will keep your engine in good condition!

Cheers @Pudding - I already ordered a VAG-COM cable - should be here tomorrow... as luck would have it my friendly local garage, about 100 yards from my door, One Way Garage / Ron Costella Tyres in Bristol, charged me £40 to do an ODB2 scan and change my alloys over with the new mk7 lookalikes I've got (not sure about them yet, but will live with them... at least can get the original Monzas dropped off for repair now anyway..)

Codes were:

00768 Random / Multiple Misfire Detected P0300 Lower Limit Reached
00769 Cylinder 1 Misfire P0301 Lower Limit Reached

So, Eurocarparts have a sale on until midnight and I have ordered 4 new NGK plugs and 2 Bosch ignition coils, so I hopefully have a spare. I think this should sort out the rough idle and Engine Warning Light, and is good practise anyway.

As for PCV, spoke to guys at Streetwise and he is using a PCV Delete kit on his Ed30 Stage 2+, so I reckon they will be OK, but still haven't made my mind up on that. Will most likely order one off of Fleabay in the middle of the night with my fingers crossed as usual...

The GFB DV+ looks like is for late-model only, mine is an early 2005 AXX engine

Service book says coil packs were recalled albeit 40k ago, timing belt and tensioner done recently

Have ordered a cam follower which I hope will be with me by the end of the week.  :jumpmove:
