Best GPS antenna for RNS510
« on: September 20, 2014, 06:32:42 pm »
Well turns out my antenna ain't the best. Pick up 5/11 satellites even with it sat on top of the dash and it says my car is about 10 metres behind...

What antenna have people bought? I need a good one that I know works as I ain't gonna be taking the rns510 out each time to try a new one to see if any good
Need the best one really...
Anyone got any links or recommendations?

Cheers

Did you get the unit coded in yet? I have a GPS antenna if you need one.

Nah was planning on today but something came up so couldn't.
From searching on here and other sites it doesn't look like it's a common problem and coding in hasn't been something people tend to have done after installing?
I am guessing it won't fix the fact the antenna is only picking up 5/12 satellites?

I'd be interested in your antenna if it's a recommended one mate?

You need three satellites for a 2d fix and 4 satellites for a 3d fix (height above sea level). If you have 5 satellites fixed out of any number then you're well okay. Seriously, I would fix the broken stuff first rather than looking for a problem that might not exist. Get it coded forst and see where you're at then. If you're still having issues then you can try another gps antenna, but until then I'd get someone to code it in for you first.

Yeah I understand... Just not sure when or how can get it coded yet. Need to try someone else on the register and see if they can help.
It's annoying as just want it sorted

The best antenna would be a roof mounted one...
Without traction power is nothing!

Hey mate... Update. Just got back from Awesome GTI and they have coded the RNS510 in.... It's still exactly the same as before.
I have also tried a second antenna and also both antennas sat on the dash. Both exactly the same results. There is about a 20 metre difference between my position and the position on the RNS...

Now I am all out of ideas. Could it be a firmware issue?
Tried everything else!

It's worth the try. You can install josi's modified 5238 firmware version that you can download from www.gpsunderground.com.

When you press and hold the "Setup" button for 15 seconds, can you get into the developer menu?

It just goes into radio service mode?

Something I just found on the link above is someone saying the time on the GPS antenna and time on the unit were set differently and matching them solved it? I wasn't aware the antenna had a time function or could it be the car and the nav system?

No, there's no time function on the antenna as such. And the time from the car is automatically carried over to the RNS unit so you can't set those differently I don't think.

Yeah that's what I thought

'I had a similar issue after upgrading. Time was incorrect on the vehicle compared to the GPS. Correcting the time and a reset of the Nav to default settings improved things ~80%. Things were 100% after a 40 minute round trip.'

I have tried a reset of the nav and still same problem.... Only other option is firmware or buying a more expensive antenna and hoping that works ... But fed up of throwing money at it really and taking my dash apart

I doubt a more expensive antenna will help. If I'd thought, I'd have asked you to get Awesome to turn on the developer menu while they were in there. Then you could check that the unit was working correctly on the Can / Dead reckoning.

Most strange. Perhaps a firmware will sort it, but I'm not sure.

The firmware update that I've mentioned will enable access to the developer's menu and activate Video-in-Motion. It's compatible with all RNS-510 versions. I use it in my RNS-510 P.

Use this link to download it: http://uploaded.net/file/u48pim74

Give us feedback after installing it. Search online for the correct instructions on how to do it correctly beforehand.

Hey mate.... I have Video in Motion already... Will that mean I should be able to access developers menu...?

Googling today it does seem a common issue with the positional lag on the gps and with no real concrete fix for it. Some say a reset, some say a new antenna and some say syncing the time (?!?!)

Mines a P version too
