Conincidence? Both CV Boots Gone!!
« on: September 23, 2014, 09:32:39 am »
So I decided to opt for a full VW dealer service on the basics... They sent me a video before I collected the car to say my passenger side CV boot was weeping which I was not aware of.

I'd be fairly up to speed on car mechanics and wouldn't miss something like this! In fairness the weep was minor and hardly any grease showed up so I'll accept that it was fresh enough. They quoted €130 to repair that day so instead I took it home and installed a new boot myself which is perfect!

This was only last week!! When washing the car on Sunday I walked by the driver side wheel and there's grease residue so I checked. I found now the driver side CV boot is also split. What are the chances that CV boots last for years on end but now both go within 7 days of one another?

Am I being paranoid or would VW have damaged it whilst doing work (by accident)? Or is this just a freak accident?

Both of mine went at around the same time last year - one I found when taking a wheel off and the other went in the following week whilst waiting to get the first done.  Ended up having 2 new genuine boot kits installed at the same time.

Could of damaged it while inspecting it would be my guess. Both old, perished rubber but the other one was OK till someone poked it. Just bad luck really!

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

Had both mine go at very close intervals with no outside interference.

I was actually going to write that in the original question because I knew someone would point it out!

Good spot but when I inspected it was completely invasive. Didn't touch it at all, just spun the wheel with a torch on it to look for grease!

So it seems quite common for both to together anyway.
Bought another boot there so will replace tomorrow

Anybody need a guide? I was thinking of writing a very brief one only as an assistance to the Haynes manual!

Did the cv joint come off easy in the end?

Very easy yes.

Angle the joint out so you can see the bearing.

One hard accurate whack and it'll come loose

Mine both went at the same time, also detected by a VW main dealer. Its an MOT fail if you don't fix it so will need doing!

In fairness I was outside sitting in front of the joint for an hour hitting it tiny whacks from different angles, googling different ways to remove it and trying to take off the inner boot before I got fed up and said what's the worst that can happen.

If I damaged it I could get a new joint so I lined it up and whacked it. Got it first time but just took some courage.

Don't hold me to this but I think Haynes manual said to WD40 it up before refitting the spline so that it will come out easy should you need to change again.

I could be wrong on this and it may actually cause it to slip in the future so don't dare sue me! I'm just trying to think back on manual.

Have parts picked up now to do second one. Will start this evening after work. Going to remove suspension while I'm there and take a look.

Also might examine the DV I installed a month back.
