Please explain the various Headlights

Could somebody please explain (or post a link) the various headlights for the mk5. Mine are going crappy on what looks the inside after giving them a clean there are run stains on the inside!, so I might change the lights......

can you post up a good clear pic? my mate had a similar thing on his GTI it turned out to be outside although it looked very much on the inside.
