Another clunking front end
« on: September 25, 2014, 10:48:43 pm »
Hi guys got a clunking from the front end when accelerating ,decelerating in a straight line and backing out of my drive when turning the steering wheel and it does it on both sides of the car but not at the same time, one time it will clunk on the left next time it will clunk on the right??? And it creaks when i back on to my drive
The car has had new shocks, top mounts, brakes and pads, poly bushed wishbone,s3 console bushes, poly dog mount bush, subframe spacers/ bolts and drop links.
So im a bit baffled as to what the problem could be.....may be ARB bushes/steering rack
The car is a 2005 GTTDI with 80000 on the clock....any help welcome, cheers.

I have been advised my problem is possibly steering rack.

Since you've changed everything else Id try that next!

Ive just changed my rack due to knocking noise over small bumps it almost felt like arb droplinks or d bushes but closer inspection confirmed the rack

Fook me i need to stop popping on here reading threads as in my short 8 week 2007 mk5 gti ownership it appears they have many many issues from engine components to steering and suspension etc
Did Vw get anything right on these cars when they designed/built them!

And i thought my previous Focus Rs suffered some shocking issues! Breeze in the park compared to threads ive read on here!

Still love my Gti tho

Is it only when your moving less than 20mph? Mine was doing this, I've got SALK, TT top mounts, subframe spacers, Vibratechnics lower engine and dog bone mount and had a gen 3 rack, it went for a while and is now back and really annoying me

To be honest, these cars are approaching 10 years old now . . a few knocks & creaks are inevitable.

Thankfully there havent been many serious engine or other mechanical weak spots identified   :happy2:

Unlike the Focus ST with its oil diaphragm, cylinder liners cracking, driveshafts. . . .
NOW: 2015 Golf R DSG 5 Door, Lapiz Blue, 19s, Discover Nav, Reversing Camera
GONE:2007 Black GTI Edition 30 3dr
