Got my eye on a ED30 - should I worry about DSG
« on: September 26, 2014, 01:39:50 am »
After driving a Leon cupra for a good 6 years Ive decided to come back to the world of Golfs. Driver of 2 mk2s previously

Found a nice silver ED30 with 73637 on the clock on a 08 plate for sale for 10900 (hoping to trade in and bring down 1k). I love everything about it. Looks great, nice alloys etc, 50 more bhp than the cupra, its got DSG and while it sounds like it'll be fun etc. I feel a little anxious as if its gonna break and cost me a load more cash.

Anyone had any bad experiences with one?

I assumed the same but after asking about I found it to be rare to hear of DSG breaking,a plus is you can map them without worrying about the clutch, only downside I found is that my next car must have DSG as well.

Exactly this ^^^^^^^^.......I'm on my 5th DSG equipped car and can't imagine being without it!

That said, the 2nd car was an 08 Leon FR and that needed a new Megatronic but the rest have been fine.

Ahh nice - yeah I can imagine. My wife has just received a company 64 plate A3 Thats a Auto with Paddles - so is that the same. You can change when you want if you put it into S

IS that how it works with a DSG box - it's auto until you shove it into S or something?

I heard about the mechatronic failing - the price of repair replacing these has come down now right? Used to be 1k plus? @@&$%!!!!

Normal mode is D,put it into S for sports mode, just lets it rev a bit higher.
Knock the gear stick to the left to use the paddles or the stick.

Should the DSG box be serviced at intervals - excuse ignorance

Congrats on finding a nice ed30, exciting times.

Why not voice your concerns to the seller, perhaps he could offer a gearbox specific warranty or maybe change the gearbox oil for you if you decide to buy, he wants to make the sale after all.

I love my dsg, it will let you drive in a relaxed manner in traffic in d mode and will offer thrills in s mode for those times when your devil horns come out. Add to that this gearbox can be mapped!....amazing twin-clutch technology.

Have you seen Jason Plato's review on youtube? He loved the golf's dsg.

Good luck...

If you have the Ed30's reg then it might be worth ringing VW customer services and checking A) when the DSG service was done and B) whether the mechatronics unit was replaced under warranty?

Iv'e not read about a replacement mechatronics to fail after the initial dodgy unit was replaced.

Hope this gives you a little peace of mind.

Sadly that car has been sold. Was a bit of a hike of a drive. 60 miles, with no motorway. 2 hours to get there!!

Found a manual one now closer. Get the ponies to play with. But the stick shifter.
