Service/MOT coming up :)
« on: September 28, 2014, 03:10:07 pm »
Hey guys!

Not been on here for a while..

Just a quick question, my car is due a service and mot in a couple of weeks, ed30 3dr DSG.

So my question to you lovely people is this, what can I buy for my beloved brum brum to make sure it's ready for winter and have them fitted at the time it goes in for its checks. My car is bog standard, I would like to think I would need new spark plugs possibly a new DV and have my uncle check the revision and PCV while he is at it. (My uncle owns the garage it is going to), so what can you guys suggest for me?

Or just let me know what you do on your annual time for its check up?

Thanks :D

Scheduled plug change is at 60k miles.

Just a good thorough check over would be ideal. Brake pads, cv boots, etc.
Have you changed the camshaft follower? DSG oil change?

Ok cool thanks for the info, DSG oil was changed by VW on its last service apparently, cam follower I have no idea, so I will ask them to check it to see if I should replace it, the car has done 35k so how often does the cam follower need checking?

The more I know the better I can keep care of him :)
(Yes it's a him and I'm a bloke, the car is an extension of me lol)

Thanks for the reply.

I changed mine on a stock car at 50k and there was only light wear to the coating. Seems to be more of an issue with cars running more power. I wouldn't be too concerned, but it is a cheap part, about £30 and half an hour labour if you want to do it.

It's a personal thing but I would get a magnetic oil drain plug if you intend to keep the car long term and only use a genuine VW oil filter.

Also make sure proper VW spec oil is used and not some cheap non-synthetic variant.
Without traction power is nothing!

What does a magnetic oil drain plug do?

All the filters I already have now which are from VW.

Attracts small bits of metal from your destroyed cam follower.

Ahh so a precaution in case it goes wrong. Ok I'll make sure and I'll have the cam follower checked.

Thanks for all the info people, the more I know.

Someone will eventually get a well looked after car. Eventually lol..

Lol, that's a worse case scenario...
Your oil will have microscopic metal particles suspended in it from the engine. The magnetic sump should stop some of these particles from circulating throughout your engine thereby reducing potential increased unnecessary wear from mating surfaces.

Ok cool so for the long term effect of possible reduced wear always get the magnetic plug. Better safe than sorry :)
