Hi everyone. New owner in Bristol - Tornado Red DSG 2005
« on: September 28, 2014, 11:10:04 am »
:jumpmove: Jumping for joy about my new motor. I've come from owning a Porsche 986 Boxster S, to having a 4-week old baby boy and a 5-door DSG Tornado Red 05 Golf GTI and I couldn't be happier (and with the added bonus that I'm not wearing my midlife crisis on my car's sleeve anymore!).

Picked this beauty up yesterday for just shy of £5k, so a bargain, 88k on the clock genuine commuter miles, 4 almost new P Zeros on it (although they're quite noisy and I may change to Eagle F1s). Needs a lot of stuff such as alloy refurb / new, plus optional extras, audio etc. to get it to spec I want, then I'm going to start modding engine, exhaust etc. once they're done. I'm sure some of you will think that's wrong way round!!

In my first flush of ownership I have already started to order lots of parts so I will be posting a few posts to try and get advice on installs of various things! Here's my list so far (as I was typing that I wrote "my lust so far"!! - Freudian slip)  :signLOL:

Flappy Paddle steering wheel - didn't come with it  :sad1: got an eye on MFSW 1 on Fleabay. I think I need a new control module to go with the wheel, and prob need to change midline speedo for a highline clock - do I need to change CECM too? Not sure yet, prob slip ring will be same but dunno... so many questions...

New alloys (perhaps 17" as I've heard they ride better) - might put some 18" mk7 ones on, or just get 18 monzas refurbed...

Thinking about reverse parking sensors for the missus but don't want to change the look of that lovely rear end   may think about reverse camera when I install this:

Pioneer AVH-X3600 DAB. I reckon peeps will tell me go OEM, but I have RCD300 in there at the moment and the reception from the stock rear window glass-mounted FM aerial is pants (love the no aerial on the roof thing though...), plus if I have DAB I won't be interested in FM stations. With this system I get DAB, which is a must for my missus, plus bluetooth without one of those ugly great VW units sitting on the dash. I've bought a CAN gateway upgrade already - 7N0907530AN - which I think I need. Other purchases for this probably include a window mounted aerial (I've used one of these in my Porsche and it worked fine for me, plus I'll mount it on the missus' side so it won't bother me!!) , iphone USB extension to glovebox, MFSW loom, cage fitting kit. Don't think I'll bother with Fakra extension as I understand that's just for FM...? May be wrong here. All this ties in with Highline, MFSW wheel, control module CECM etc., so will need advice on this at some point!

VAG-VCDS system - think I will need it with all these changes, and future mods to consider - is it worth getting a £40 system from Fleabay to do these upgrades?

Probably tackle folding door mirrors sometime in the future as the mirrors and surrounds are slighty chipped anyway. Realise that folding mirrors = lots of the folding stuff, but what can I say, I like the action and that whirrrrrr.....   :ashamed:

Need to complete the toolkit which is missing a couple of things

Couple of chips etc., sort them out

Wrap the bits of crappy plastic surround that are chipped, i.e., trim round the gear selector... probably plastidip but maybe carbon fibre

Fit cupholders in rear (at the moment the flap just falls off when you pull it and there's no cupholders!

Had thought about looking out for Xenon headlights, ballasts, self-levelling kit etc. but this is last on my list and probably get round to it after...

new discs (brembo?), Boost Valve & PCV replacement, Induction kit (ITG?), Milltek exhaust upgrade, intercooler, uprated diff, perhaps coilover springs although this car is a family car too so needs to be smooth to keep missus and baby happy...

Jesus, I'm gonna be busy (and skint by the looks of it...)

This is probably far too much info for a hello post, but I told you, I'm excited. I'll get on to posting in the various appropriate forums in the near future...

Nice car :happy2:

Make sure you replace the Cam Follower ASAP - especially as yours will be an AXX engine which is known to wear the follower.

Nice!  I've just placed deposit on it's twin (minus the leather), will be picking it up on Friday, was sold on it when I started fiddling with the DSG on test drive and felt like an F1 driver!  Good luck with it.  I have similar wish list for mine I'll be working through.

Regards the cam follower comments GrayMK5GTI - for the non techies - what bit is this?   (previous cars have been Mk1 Golf, MGB etc, and last few have been Prius so Golf sits in between regards tech levels!).

Hi all, and thanks for the welcome! Had a nightmare earlier today though - was on a slooooowww run to the boy's great grandma's house in Sodding Chipbury, about a 30-mile round trip (could it get less GTI?!?), when I noticed the engine light (the Lambda one) was on... well of course my missus wasn't happy as it was all I could think about, esp. as all the garages were shut! Plus she was asking why I didn't have a mechanic check over the car before purchase (oh no, she has a point!!!). Not a happy bunny. Asked the previous owner but they said they had never seen a light (hope that's true, they did seem like nice peeps!)...

Worst thing is my folks are coming down from Derby to visit the kid today, and my missus is out on Tuesday so this won't get fixed until at least midweek

So now I am up at 1am to feed the boy his bottle and all I can think about is my poorly GTI - am I a bad Dad??  :signLOL:

Still, at least I "won" (if winning can involve forking out a ton of bunce) a flappy paddle MFSW DSG mk5 steering wheel on Fleabay last night, along with a control module... it's got an R badge on it but I think they were the same wheel, just different badge on the flat bottom end - here's hoping!! I've also ordered those mk7 alloys, so should look like a bit like this... personal thing but I like 'em, plus I may get some 17 monzas for winter  , and I got a cheap (but original VW) CAN gateway ready for the stereo install! Made me feel a bit better...

Just looking for highline speedo - seen an R one but not sure if it will fit my car - anyone know where I can find a VW parts number list for our cars? I've had a dig around the forum but can't seem to find one...

So, gotta find a specialist to help me with my engine light... gonna try PC Motors as they are close to me, but also may look at Streetwise if I have no luck there. Will let you know how I get on.

GRAYMK5GTI - cheers dude. perhaps the folower is my problem - idle is rough, possible timing issue? Haven't gone through old service paperwork yet to check if it has been done. Will have it checked out when I get this damned engine light sorted...

prp74 - cheers! Until I saw that damned engine light I thought I had a bargain, and I did "save" a few grand on what I thought I would pay for the car anyway, so hopefully that "spare" dosh (taking food out of my baby's mouth eh, how could I!?  :signLOL:  )  will get most of these things done, especially as I will have a bash at any sort of install myself given a socket set and Youtoob!

montythemole - congrats! hope it is everything you wanted, although coming from a Toyota Pious I reckon it'll be a hoot!! For me, leather seemed to be the obvious choice as I imagine baby will eventually sick up all over the back, so wipe on wipe off as Mr Miyagi used to say... as for DSG, flappy paddles are an essential for me with this box. I used to have a Passat CC as a company car a while back and it had flappy paddles, as did my Jag XF (dogsh*t car in a lot of ways but again, company car), enjoyed on both of those and they were diesel, so I knew they would come in handy on a GTI. Honestly, I would have gone for a manual had the missus not specified auto (don't know why, she's got her Mini so she can keep her filthy mitts off this, but all part of the new car negotiation...) but I am mega happy with the way this DSG box works in this car, so I think I got the better option in the end. The way I look at it I will probably spend another £300 getting it to flappy paddle so I'm happy with the overall price.

Cam followers - I see them as tapets, i.e., camshaft rotates, these "follow" and ensure good timing?? I'm probably way off, but it's a known issue and I'm gonna have PC Motors or Streetwise look at that for me. I'll let y'all know how I get on.

Good choice of GTI  :happy2:

Shame to hear about the engine light, one option would be to see if anyone local with VCDS could give it a scan for you to save some diagnostics fees, there is a list of willing VCDS owners here:
 http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,88875.0.html

I had midline clocks as standard when I purchased my GTI. Also decided to go down the highline route, a very good oem upgrade! There is a lot of reaserch you can do online about it. You need to find your clocks last three digits (being 2005 like mine should imagine 960) either need to remove clocks to check sticker or VCDS required again
There's a bit of information here, but mainly diy. I had mine fitted by Eddie-NL (member on here) he knows EVERYTHING about this subject.
http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,33055.0.html
The R clocks would fit but the needles are white and not red like the GTI clocks so imo best looking for a set of GTI clocks  :happy2:

Cam followers is a bit hit and miss to wether a garage is aware of it, but it's only a 30-60min job at most for a garage.

Keep up the good work  :drinking:

v4rley you're a legend. That's some really good advice right there. I'll look up Eddie-NL asap. 906 - will have a look - great info. And gotta be the red GTI clock then!!!

I ordered a 12.12 VCDS cable, off of t'interweb - I know people have had issues with these sort of cables, and this isn't necessarily gonna do the job for me, but it should be here by Wednesday which unfortunately, due to baby and visitors and work, is the next time I'll be able to get out to the Golf anyway.  I'll let you know how I get on.

I'm hoping specialist will know about followers more than a stealership, and as far as forums go it looks like I'm very lucky to have PC Motors and Streetwise on my doorstep here in Brizzol.

Cheers dude   :drinking:

PS I also bought some of these... look, it is my GTI OK?  :happy2:

Yeah leather is ideal for vomiting kids.  Mine are 4 and 6 and still have the odd issue, but after a month looking at cars to replace my company car I got sick of looking and bought the GTI, have those hose-able covers for back seat from the Prius anyway.  DSG was also a requirement to keep wife happy, she's really gone off manuals (and to be honest I sort of have as well, they are quite backward).

Hope the warning light is sorted.  I'm slightly dreading any issues with mine as I've been used to just shouting at the company lease company and having the magic fairies fix any issues free for last 10 years or so!

The cam follower is a little thimble which sits on the end of the high pressure fuel pump. Its driven by an extra lobe on the cam shaft. Becasue of the forces on the follower it wears (particularly on AXX engines (2004-2006). If it fails, it takes out the fuel pump and the cam shaft - its a £1500 repair.

The Cam follower is a fairly simple DIY for most (unless you have the notorius banjo bolt). The part only costs around £35

May well be doing cam follower as well then.  Mine's a leggy 135k so it will hopefully have been done at some point but not hurt to do again.

@montythemole Glad to say the engine management light has been sorted - my VCDS cable still hasn't turned up, so took it along to Ron Costella Tyres (at the end of my street!) to get my new alloys swapped (pics below) and he said he would plug in and diagnose for free... nice one! Cylinder 1 was misfiring so he reset the fault, and I then bought 4 new sparks and a couple of coils from EuroCarParts 50% off sale, a couple of hours later the car is idling nicely and smooth firing. It took me hours because for some reason the coil connectors did NOT wanna come off... seized is not the word! Managed to snap off the tiny little top retaining plastic clip off a couple of the connectors in the process, but I'm not too worried about that as they hold in place... it may be something I sort in the future but good job I'm not going for show car...

I'm no mechanic (as my bodge job on sparks proves!) but with a bit of courage (dutch if you like), some strong info from forums & Youtoob and a basic set of tools I am sure you can manage most basics. The best thing is the support on here. Porsche owners are good, but VAG owners take it to a whole new level!

Flappy paddle MFSW steering wheel arrived and looks spot on, just need to get proper wiring loom. TBH, I may have the right one but will either need VCDS, or waiting for my Kenwood DNX525DAB to arrive so I can make the time to get in there and have a look, then fit everything at the same time. Managed to get a highline clock too, so will hopefully have quite a sorted interior... but it's the paddles I'm most interested in!!

Cam follower is in the post, as is GFB DV+ Diverter Valve, REVO PCV Blank Kit, CAN Gateway, and a couple of trim bits...

I even got some Privacy SHades sun shades for the boy, so ya know, I'm not that bad a Dad...

Next job for me is oil change with Shell Helix 5w30, time permitting
