Need help identifying these wires
« on: October 04, 2014, 09:47:30 am »
Does anyone know what these bunch of wires are next to the wiring loom for the system. It's the greys ones which have been cut up and Sellotaped to the loom and also glued, all done by the previous owner.

Thanks

Those wires look like they relate to the phone connections on the RNS510, maybe the microphone or suchlike? Do you have Bluetooth fitted?

It looks like he was trying to connect with the first two pins which are for the rear speakers. I recently had to put a new pin in that block as the mute on the rns510 moved from the main block.

Well, that block is relevant to the phone / mic installation, so if you don't have them installed then it's safe to say they aren't doing anything. Certainly if they are doing something then I would have them better connected that they currently are.

Will I lose my rear speakers if I take it off? Shall I follow the grey loom and take it off from the main connection

If you check on this site you can see exactly which pins your wires are connected to and for what purpose. http://www.my-gti.com/529/volkswagen-rns-510-pin-assignments

You need to be looking at "Multi-pin connector 3, 12-pin, for telephone and microphone signals ".

Do you have an MDI installed?

If you don't have an MDI fitted, then it can't be the MDI loom that has been cut up and connected to the phone terminals.

Check and see exactly which terminals those wires would connect to when the quadlock is inserted to the rear of the RNS510 unit, and cross reference with the wiring diagram on the page I linked to earlier. From your picture it looks like they hit terminals 6, 11, and 10 on multi-pin connector number three. But if those pins are loose and can move about then they might've been inserted after the quadlock was connected, and could've been on different ones. Possibly the microphone connection? Take a look in the interior light in the headlining and see if there's a microphone in the slot there. That would be my guess, but it's a bodge job by someone so I'm not sure what you'll find connected to the other end.
