Bit different to the uk, but when in Iceland a couple of years ago I had a rental hyundai i30 with winter tyres on and wad driving through 6 inches of snow with no problems at all.  Grip was amazing and I couldn't believe the difference that winter tyres made.
If I knew for sure that we would have a bad winter then I would put winter tyres on my gti without a doubt.  Long journey to work through country roads and hills.  But we may have a winter like last year and it would be a waste!

Better to have them and not need them... I just leave them tucked up until the weather is right.  It snows every year here in the mountains, so I personally wouldn't be without them.

I have R32 front brakes on 17'' Omanyts atm.

Not much space left available but with no spacers required.

Cheers

If i can pick something up cheap I think i might go for it, rather have them than not I suppose?

What sort of steel rim size should i be looking for? (got standard GTI brakes so would 15" and bigger be okay?)

16" is the minimum that will fit over standard brakes

Having experienced getting stuck on a large hill in winter with summer tyres a few years ago, I have a full set of winters on a set of Monza's.

I know you can drive with snow on the ground and get through, but its not just about snow!!! Its about low temperatures, ice & snow.

It is really night & day, confidence under braking. Well worth investment.

The price on the goodyear ultragrip is a steal!!!!  :signLOL:

Just seen that, I was going to buy the last pair (having bought 1 pair) and they'd gone - never mind, I've got FAR too many tyres as it is. :rolleye:  Nah, seriously far too many.  :ashamed:

Doesn't matter what tyre I have on the car in the winter, never found the right tyre for my wheelchair to get to the car  :driver:
