You need to know if M8 or M10 bolts fitted ( new bolts should be used)

First initially tighten diagonally to 10 NM then for


M8 - 40NM

M10 - 70 NM

That's correct above for a ribbed new bolt but if not ribbed it's still the same values as posted previously as they come ribbed and none ribbed!!!!

As I said the "new style" comes ribbed and un-ribbed with the same part number for both but two different torque values!

After much trawling of the net I found this Golf workshop manual which confirms the Torquing procedure.

The torque value and angle are the same for the new 12 point bolts (part no. WHT005437) as for the old 6 sided bolts: 200Nm then 180 degrees.

The lower value quoted in the Haynes Manual for '12 point bolts' actually relates to 12 point bolts WITH RIBBING on the face of the head. Illustrations and full details on this link:

The twelve-point head bolt are only distinguishable on the contact surfaces -arrow A- and -arrow B-.

I can vouch for the difference, having taken off old bolts with ribbing and installed some new bolts without ribbing.

I'm not sure I quite managed the 180 degrees, it's a real b'atch!

Put it this way mine was never torqued up to that figure of 200 NM + 180 degrees as it come un done dead easy with a lot smaller bar than I tightend it up with.
If you put the orignial figure on of 70NM + 90 degrees the bolts is over 200NM as I checked it afterwards to make sure and the torque wrench clicked at 200NM without moving.
The resultant end load in the bolt is the important bit which should be the same irrelevant of the configuration. Mine is staying like that. The torque of 200NM + 180 must be massive!

A quick resurrection of this topic to ask a couple of questions;

- Is it a given that all 'new' bolts are, or should be, the 12pt type (ribbed or unribbed)?

- Just picked up a boot kit from Eurocarparts to find that, despite being shown in the description, there is no hub bolt in the box. OK to reuse (with thread lock) the one taken off?

- The new boot is also made of polyethylene plastic. Is that the norm these days (i.e. rubber versions gradually being replaced with the 'plastic' version, but equally as good)?

I bought an SKF set of outer CV joints and they came with the old style bolt, the old ones on the car were an 17mm allen hex which caught me off guard as who has one of those!
