How To Prepare For Winter!!
« on: October 07, 2014, 07:54:18 pm »
Anybody care to share their thoughts and ideas on how they prepare their cars for winter?

I've jetseal 109'd it last month in advance of the harsher winter months.

I might get some winter tyres and steel wheels.

Thinking of rubber mats so i don't ruin my new ones.

Antifreeze topped up.

New battery already in.

Anything at all you guys usually do?

Thick coat of wax on the paintwork (I use Colinite 746s).

I also smear some wax around the arches to help keep the rust away  :happy2:

Several thin layers is always better than one thick layer. Some people underseal the undersides. As above, make sure the car is in good condition, check all tyre pressures incl spare. Think about a winter kit eg snow shovel, blanket, food etc. Breakdown cover.

Vw do rubber mats which are great for rain and snow.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

I make sure :

windscreen wash is diluted to a higher washer fluid to water ratio - I also use the genuine VW stuff
Renew wiper blades if not done so in the last 12 months
Seal the windscreen with a dedicated sealant - eg Gtechniq G1 or Wolfs glass guard.
Treat door/boot seals with Aerospace 303 to stop them sticking / binding when the weather gets very cold

I love Collinite 476, going to Clay / SRP / 476 it soon. :happy2:
I then swap to Bat mode... black winter rims, black front grill, all black badges - about November if the weather is poor enough.

Nothing like switching the heated seats on + aircon full blast Lo... f*ck you polar bears  I jest.

I'm happy enough I have all of this done last month now

3 coats jetseal and 2 coats autoglym super hd wax
3 coats G1 applied to all windows
New tyres to be delivered next week for winter
Wiper blades replaced
Gumfi Pledge added to all door seals

I like to add a nice warm steering wheel cover to keep my hands warm.....

As much as I don't want to admit it, my hands were freezing this morning so I tucked them into my jacket before grabbing the steering wheel. One of these would be great!

I might try pick up those rubber mats from VW so. Have you gotten them before? Rough idea of price, going in next week for laser alignment and a few other bits so just want to budget.

I feel I can't even look in the for sale section as I live in Ireland so shipping would just ruin any savings I hope to make.
