Some RNS-510 prefer DVD+R DL. The brand you used is good.

You can try to burn again and do it at the slowest speed possible.

What is the difference between a DVD-R and a DVD+R? I have burnt with 4x, which was the lowest I can go to I think. Is the RNS510 really that fussy?

Yeah, they get fussy with age, unfortunately. One of the reasons I got a P version as I had to burn 5-6x a DVD DL to update the maps.

My laptop can burn at 2,4x. Last time I had to clean the lenses of the burner with a cotton tip embedded in alcohol and apply some force to make it burn correctly the DVD. 7 years laptop also gets the lenses dirty.

Maybe I should try and go for the update via the SD card. As far as I understand a DVD is used only to trick the unit in taken the files from the SD card rather than trying to read them off the DVD. The DVD to trick them can be a normal DVD and does not nee to be dual layer. Have you had any experience with updating via SD?

Both, my laptop and my PC can ready the disk fine, it is just the RNS510. Maybe a clean of the unit would help? I think I still have an CD-player cleaning kit somewhere with a little brush fitted to the disk for cleaning the lens. I will have a look later.

I never tried the SD Card map update but it's a good alternative. Check the gpsunderground forum, they explain how to do it.

The SD card method involves a firmware update procedure and is subject to the usual "You have been warned" warnings. Also, once done you'll lose all the other available voice / language packs which you may find useful at some point.

It's much better to get a properly sorted maps disc and do the job properly than take the cop out option and use the SD card. Don't think that because something can be done, that it should be done. There's a steady stream of users who did the SD card fix and now don't have an RNS510 they can use....

Viking seems to have a lot of experience with these units. Better do what he recommends. It can be hard to copy the maps sometimes but it's risk free.

Keep trying to burn better DVDs or try cleaning your RNS-510 lenses with a good CD/DVD lenses cleaner to avoid damaging the lenses.

Oh, I was not aware of this. it sounds like the installation from an SD card is not a 'full' installation? The website I was looking at implicated that all is the same other than the process of updating and the end result is the same than using a disk? Nothing was said a firmware update either and I have done this already to the latest I could find. So it is just the maps left for me.
I just started to burn another DVD with 2x speed and a Pioneer dvd drive. I will use the same DVD-R DL from Verbatim. If time tonight I will try it.

I found my cleaning disk and cleaned the lens. I tried the disk again but it still came up with the disk error.

Not much longer and the 2nd disk is ready for me to try.

How are you burning the discs (what program)? And here's a tip. Use Verbatim DVD+R DL discs...

I am using the burn-to-disk function within windows 7. I burn at 2x speed. I am using Verbatim DVD-R DL. What is the difference between +R and -R

Stop wasting discs using Windows burning software. The maps should be an .iso file which means they need burning with an image burning program. Download free program imgburn, install, "right click" on the maps .iso and select "open with > imgburn". Then tick the box that says verify, then select burn speed of X1. Then burn a DVD+R DL Verbatim disc.

I will, I will.
Just downloaded the imgburn. What is the difference between a +R and a -R DVD Dual Layer?

What's the difference between summer tyres and winter tyres? They look the same, don't they?

+R & -R are different formats essentially. And most RNS units seem to prefer the +R format.
