It's probably something simple like a sensor fault, but until you can get it scanned with VAG COM or by the dealership then your not going to know 100%.

Idle control or airleak somewhere?

Unless you get it scanned for the faults your not going to know.

Have you checked the VAG COM register to see if any members are near you to help out?

ive just had the diagnostic done the error code coming up is

PO601 ECUM   - memory check sum error

the garage said it could be a number of things which didnt help! rang the warranty companay, they are saying i may not be covered for the ecu so........

im thinking to change to Warranty Direct and get the extra cover which covers ecu, if i then went to the garage it should be sorted out, thats my idea but its just abit strange how its all gone down, the car is still running fine, only thing im noticing is that on start up the rev meter goes above 10 for maybe a second and then comes back down when at idle.

it is very noisy on start up but im assuming thats due to the cold.

should i be alarmed about this or could it be a minor thing? has anyone come across this error code?

so it just needs an update? that doesnt sound too bad, the garage i took it to said it could cost up to 500 to fix if the ecu is faulty but im thinking thats unlikley as the car is running fine,

vw are saying they will charge 90 for a diagnostic to tell me exactly what is wrong with it, may well go down that root, the local garage dont seem that great to me.

just need to change to warranty direct first.

Where are you based Faheem?

There are loads of VW independant specialists who will do a full diagnostic for less than £90.

Apart from the diesel noise when cold (normal as long as not excessive) and the idle (normal in colder weather to start off above 1k rpm and then drop)have you noticed anything specifically out of the ordinary?

What were you doing with the car just prior to the light coming on?

Is your car re-mapped by an aftermarket tuner?
If so, take it back to the tuner and let them know before the dealer.

Have you had the error code removed and if so has it come back?
If it hasn't come back it may have just been a "glitch". If it comes back it will require another solution.

im up north , west yorkshire, i did take it to a local garage, he removed the epc and engine symbol but when i switched the car off and re started it , first the epc and then the engine symbol came back up.

its not been chipped to my knowledge and doesn't seem any quicker than what it should be.

i just parked up and switched the car of for about 10-15 mins while waiting for someone and then switched it back on and the light came on out of the blue, got home, went back out about 30 mins later and then the engine symbol came on.

i find it strange because it runs fine, nothing strange at all only thing was the rev counter but like u say that may be due to the cold, the garage who did the diagnostic didnt really make anything clear to me at all! they just gave me this error code and said it could anything LOL

any suggestions for a good specialist around my area? have you got any idea what could be wrong?

appreciate the help !

some useful info over on golfmkv.com...
remember its US related though.
have you just bought the car? whats the age ?

Ok to all you expert desktop mechanics and tuners here is some information.
Go and find audi technical bulletin 01 07 04 Feb. 26, 2007, 2013535/1
this specifically refers to "MIL ON and DTC P0601 (ECM malfunction) stored in the Engine Control Module data memory. No driveability concern."
Many VW owners got a letter about this very issue and would be addressed when the car came in for a service and received the OY update.
So this car in question according to my records got flashed well before any update was performed by VW.

Secondly i am very surprised by the words of the VW service center about claiming a faulty ecu. they know very well about this issue and the procedure to rectify it, they do hold a specific bulletin on this, do they even read their bulletins?

Yes the fault can be repaired by reflashing the ECU with updated code and its up to the owner of the car to get the car reflashed.

its a 55 plate, 29 k, it seems like it is defo the ecu but im just thinking now what best to do, if i have to get it reflashed/updated then i dont think its too costly but if i have to get the ecu replaced im assuming it aint gona be cheap!?
