Shame it isn't just the grille

True - but to be honest I would have paid £75 just for the grill so I considered the other bits to be an added bonus

Today the car was treated to a wash and polish with an interior valet and leather clean - came up like new!

Hi Stu,

Enjoyed reading your thread. I am a UK citizen living in Canada and looking at a GTI it has done the same amount of miles as yours with excellent history up to 20000/1 year ago. Any tips on what to look at?
Thanks

Steve,

Best advice really is the overall condition of the vehicle. Check for service history and evidence it has been cherished by the previous owner - receipts for all the work and so on. Little things like the quality of the tyres reflect on the owner in my opinion - I was very fortunate with my car and its condition despite the huge mileage. I have since had it independently inspected for piece of mind and everything came back in the green. Maybe you could arrange to have one of these done to the vehicle you are looking at. Finally see if you can take a code reader to the viewing and check the ECU for any issues?
Good luck  :happy2:

Simple little change today in-between rain showers and blazing sunshine!
New footrest from eBay arrived so I thought it would be cheeky not to get it installed

Bits removed from the motor

Drilled a couple of holes through the plastic to attach the new bling

And back in the motor

Got it from this seller

Nice one. I bet it doesn't drive like a car with 170k on it, definitely doesn't like it  :happy2:

Cheers for the encouragement - yep it is in great condition considering the mileage but it goes to show that motorway miles off turbo dont count as that makes up nearly 90% of the odometer reading!

After clocking 170k I had a nice parcel waiting for me when I got home from work

My new induction kit had arrived - after looking at Revo/Forge/ITG and so on I decided to have a punt on a cheaper version (because I am tight!)
First impressions are very good - it is well made and everything fitted well

Removed engine cover and old intake pipes

Had some heat resistant tape in the garage so put it to good use - its top stuff and looks like gold carbon fibre upclose

All installed

Just come back from a quick run to the shop and it has a lovely whooosh and suck!  :happy2:

Had another small package arrive yesterday
Nice new Votex Gear-knob - cheers Gareth for getting it to me so quickly!

Popped it straight into the car and it looks great - the old shifter was good just a little worn from so much use!

Decided to give the engine a bit of a clean too however I forgot to take an after shot! Here is the before!

There were twigs, leaves, dust and all sorts lurking around the inlet! Lovely  :signLOL:

Cheers mate - car is stinking though and needs a good bath!
Unlike yours that was looking very menacing and shiny as a new pin!
Looking forward to having a good look up close - proper machine with a lovely exhaust note
Apologies for not replying sooner, been spending all day on a first aid at work course and then all evening sorting out my camper van engine/gearbox

Although my camper engine is looking a bit more healthy now!

Went from this

To this

Fingers crossed it will be back installed this afternoon and the golf can get some attention!  :happy2:

Great work on the camper engine mate, that lot would have me stumped! :happy2:

After hearing a screaming noise coming from under the bonnet this morning on the way to work, when backing off boost -  I sort of self diagnosed a failed PCV valve being the issue!
Was still on the one it came out of the factory with!

So I went online and found a replacement from GSF for £25 - result in my book!
Finished work early, collected the new valve and have just installed it - one of the easiest jobs I have done!

Some pics for those who may attempt the job in the future

New valve straight out of the package!

Old one that was screaming to be replaced!

4 screws later and it was off

New one installed and good to go

No more screaming!  :happy2:
