Standard air box power
« on: October 19, 2014, 03:27:04 pm »
Just looking at getting my car maped and was wondering what power the standard air box with a piper cross panel is capable of achieving? Is there a point where it will be useless? Just a down pipe with decat fired to my gti.

I'll probably be going Stage 2 R-Tech with just panel filter and DP & SC which should be good for around 315bhp.

I've heard of people doing stage 2+ with standard paper filter

I'd guess around 258bhp, but it depends on the condition of your engine and who's mapping it

Mine ran 270bhp stage 2+ with std airbox and paper filter. Don't be fooled by after market filters as mine ran fine with the paper. With the k&n I had a boost fluctuations which went when the paper one fitted.

I run just a K&N panel filter in the standard air box, granted I also run an APR carbon intake which is purely for show, but that coupled with a cat-back exhaust and a DV+ sees me around the 250-260BHP (need verifying).

From looking into it about a year ago, many of the tuners argue that there's little need to swap out the standard air intake until you run a bigger turbo. So for standard GTI with a K03 turbo, it's not cost effective so I was lead to believe.

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

There are plenty of charts out there to prove a good 10bhp gain from a decent intake.
I put a stock intake back on my Golf as I'm splitting it (still with the Revo Stage2 software) and it definitely lacks a teeny bit top end compared to when it had the evoms.. . More torque though.
