New spare key?
« on: October 20, 2014, 06:04:27 pm »
Hi everyone,

My gti unfortunately came with 1 key and I'd like to get a spare made up. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I've seen fobs on ebay for as little as £20.. I've also heard of mobile key people who come to you and make you up a key.. What's best?

Also, how much would I be looking to spend on this?

Thanks in advance!

Mario

Think when I lost one of my keys for a short time I was getting prices of £145 (specialist) to £190 (main dealer) , rip off , then I found the missing key before I got my hand in my pocket

What year is your Golf? As Mid 2006 they became much harder to code keys as the immobiliser security changed and it's pretty much VW only job unless someone has the right equipment

Recently had my key recoded at Dealer for £40 on my 2008 Gti as battery went flat and lost its comms with car!
Think new key is about £150

Before going the dealer i tried some mobile guy and all he did was end up locking me from starting the car for 300 mins, was an immobilisor lockout countdown apparantly happens if try code key too many times and dont know what your doing etc
Needless to say i gave the guy a mouthful and told him to leave

I used a mobile chap called Craig when I needed a new key for my toledo he is on most of the facebook VAG pages.

I already had bought keys of Ebay cost me £80 to code two IMMO's and fobs. I would highly recommend him if you can find him  :happy2:

be careful buying second hand fobs on ebay as the id chip in for car can only be used once...

but you can get new id chips but make you order correct one for your car.

props pick them up for all in parts 40quid..
but will need programing and cutting

Get one from a dealer , get quotes from seat and skoda too and go to the cheapest . Then again ...  why do you need a spare ? I have never lost a vehicle key in 33 years of owning cars and motorbikes .
