Not another bad alternator?
« on: October 27, 2014, 07:48:22 pm »
Just what I need going into winter, lol.

I replaced the Alternator about, hmm, a little over 12 months ago and it's been fine, just gave it a quick scan when messing with another mod and comes back with:

==
01117 - Generator Terminal DF Load Signal
            008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent
             Freeze Frame:
                    Fault Status: 00101000
                    Fault Priority: 2
                    Fault Frequency: 1
                    Reset counter: 19
                    Mileage: 208781 km
                    Time Indication: 0

             Freeze Frame:
                        ON
                    Voltage: 12.40 V
                        ON
                        ON
                        OFF
                        OFF
                        OFF

==

Is this more than likely a bad alternator "again" wiring seems ok and battery isn't too old replaced about the same time as the Alternator.

Starting seems unaffected.

First thing is use a volt metre to check the battery charge itself, both with the ignition on and off.

You could just be stupidly unlucky, I had a friend who had a starter motor replaced and it broke within a month. Most parts come with a 12 month warranty anyway so you may be able to claim against that and get it replaced (labour is probably not covered though).

Check your battery with a voltmeter a fully charged battery should be 13.2 v the alternator should put out about 14-14.5 volts at least the output will cut off about 15 to stop over charging , the problem you will have is when you switch on a few things the alternator wont cope and the extra will just be drawn from the battery

Thanks chaps, I'll try those tomorow - will have a good look at the wiring again, as the fault code seems to point at that as being the problem.

TBH, I'm glad it's now and not in the depths of winter somewhere. :happy2:

A wire and terminals may look fine, but ultimate test is to use your volt meter again to check current flow through the wires themselves. Don't ask me how to actually use a volt meter, I always have to read the instructions! :laugh:

Also a good idea make sure your main earth nut, Butterfly one going onto the alternator is tight and connected correctly. I had mine replaced and the garage didnt put washers on and it was loose.  :happy2:
