Help me out guys

After ripping out the airbox / battery / alternator etc. yesterday to check for a wiring problem... replce everything, get the usual traffic light on the dash, drove it for a bit all go out.

But today, ESP light stays on with error:

I reset the fault for it to return immediately. ESP light stays on.

It seems a bit of a conicidence I was messing about yesterday for this to show up.

Does anyone know where the brake pressure sensor is?  Help me out, having nothing but trouble lately :(

No wishing to sound like I'm taking the p***, but have you checked the fuses in both fuse boxes to make sure that when you re-applied the power you didn't blow one?

I haven't mate, time strapped lately with little people, lol --- willing to try all suggestions, and thanks.

I'm just hoping it's not the dreaded ABS pump

If you got a Haynes manual or something, have a look at where any braking system fuses are in the car and check each one carefully to see if it's gone. Hopefully it's one of those gone due to the added stresses of power surges from playing around with the battery.

I had a similar issue with g201 code showing last year after i had removed battery to change steering wheel and after a google, i also dreaded the worst!

However, it may be that the brake pressure sensor, that is inside the ABS module needs basic settings doing.

I did basic settings for steering angle, lateral acceleration and brake pressure sensor and eventually the lights went out. It took a few goes though.

Did you disturb the wiring going to the ABS module? Try removing cleaning / plugging back in?

Regarding Fuses turns out they are all listed in the handbook, I pulled & replaced two 30A ones for the ABS/PAS... it really didn't like that, lol --- lost power steering basic settings but easily sorted, sadly the ESP/ABS problem is still there.

I checked the plug into the ABS module, it's a monster plug and PITA location (But I guess much better than our American cousins who would probably have to remove the master cylinder to even see it), I disconnected and reconnected.

I tried the G201 Basic Settings recal.
Firstly it wouldn't let me in, but did the security method and then could see it and tried to do the basic settings but it Returned ERROR.

I checked the pressure, which sat at 250bar or something daft, where's it is meant to be +-8.0 bar.

It seems so daft and coincidental that this could be the ABS pump... I've had lots of phantom errors before when removing the battery etc. but they've always been sorted with a basic setting recal. or just driving it.

Poor timing too, as I like ESP in the winter as it's kept me out of the weeds a few times on snow/ice.

I had the pump go on mine a few years ago, after being in the car all day, got home went inside and returned later to put car back on the driveway and the fault was there, no warning or symptoms, just g201. There not bad to do once you get the airbox/ battery and battery tray out of the way.

Had this problem at the start of the year and had to replace the abs pump....striaght forward job costing in the 200 pound region

Cheers chaps --- I'm in denile it's the ABS pump atm, lol.

I still have my original Alternator wiring issue (I've got a loom on order) £10, so I'll replace that first.
Then I'm going to try clearing all codes and re-do the basic settings coding multiple times.
Then try a new Brake Pedal Switch; £5
Then finally admit defeat and either buy a second hand pump or the Fix kit and DIY it.

Oh and the A/C still needs doing which I'm hoping is not the compressor and more bucks.

The amount of parts I've replaced on this motor, I'm slowly building a brand new car.

With your A/C, does it make any funny noises when in use like whining or grinding noise? If not, could be just a faulty pressure switch or O ring which is cheap to replace.

Computer says no... haven't had the A/C topped up yet and that's what it's moaning about, but we'll see :|

If it's low on gas then chances are is the switch or O rings gone. If the compressor is knackered you'd hear it whining or grinding itself into oblivion. Hope that's some good news for you.

My diesel before my GTI became a problem child, I sold it off as I'd rather take the hit than spend ages chasing faults. Just saying...

Two options;

Admit defeat, sell it and take it on the chin

Turn it into an all out project, replace everything where you can and just live with a never ending project.

What's the alternator wiring issue?

The pressure switch is inside the abs pump.  Changing the brake light switch won't help, plus it's a pita to get to as it's under the master cylinder.  You need a new abs pump.

Regular brake fluid changes can help stop the fault.
