Help! Coolant leak and EGR Delete Questions
« on: November 03, 2014, 06:16:55 pm »
Hello!
Had an MOT Today and while it was in I asked them to do a compression test as I've been losing coolant  :scared: No external leaks where found so it must be internal so either EGR Cooler or  :scared: cracked head   :scared:
The guy told me that it was more likely to be the EGR cooler as it's more common especially as I have a revision C Head, He then told me that the only place he could get a replacement cooler from was direct from VW who charge £270  Also that it'd be 4 hours labour to fit and I risk paying all the money without knowing that it is the EGR cooler in the first place

1st question is:
Coolant leaking from max to min roughly every 3 weeks, no water in the oil but my emissions where rather high ( he had to do the test 3 times for it to pass) Car is an 06 tdi 140 with 107000 miles on the clock, could it be anything else?

2nd question:
Is there anyway of testing it without removing it?

I have had a look on the forum about EGR's and a lot of people simply get rid of them and the cooler, this seems to be my cheapest option and the best for my engine according to what a lot of people say on here but I have some questions

Are there any known issues after removing the EGR?

Will I notice any difference?

I told the guy that was doing my MOT about this and I was told that I'd need a complete remap, My car has already been mapped by nicky to 180 so do I still need another remap or can I get the someone who can code to do it?

Last question (or 2)!
If I need a remap how muc would R tech charge or is there a cheaper alternative?

Sorry for the amount of questions but am in need of Help!

I'm thinking I want to remove it as well as the EGR Rather than replace it to be honest, If you don't minde me asking, how much would you be looking for it and also how much was your remap and where did you get it done?

Thanks for the offer and the replies mate but I think I just want to get rid of the bloody thing! Sounds like it's the right thing to do! Have you noticed any drawbacks like the engine taking longer to warm up or fuel consumption?

I've seen that and it makes it look quite easy! Did you do it yourself?

I'm having exactly the same problem, losing coolant slowly and no apparent leaks, no mixing of coolant and oil (Only started a couple of months ago). My emissions though were good. I also have a revision C head and hope its not that.  I'm thinking of removing the EGR cooler but mechanics are not my strong point.

There are no drawbacks to removing the egr cooler as long as you remove or blank the egr at the same time.
Once removed you won't really see any difference once removed.
Its just one less thing to go wrong.

Once removed you will get an emissions fault causing the ECU light to come on.
Its fine to drive in this state, but most people get the egr mapped out which stops the ECU trying to operate the egr valve.

Thanks Jason you answered a question which I forgot to add! Was wondering how long I could leave the car, without a map, after removing the EGR! Looks like I'm getting my hands dirty this weekend! Roughly how much should it cost to get the EGR Mapped out?

I think its around the £80 mark on its own. I haven't had mine mapped out yet.
Read the guide fully and make sure you have everything you need before starting, including in some hose to bridge the small coolant hoses once the cooler is removed.
I think its 7mm internal diameter. I got some off eBay.

If possible please could you send me the ebay link or confirm the length and diameter, I can't find the header tank hose, that was recommended in the write up anywhere!
