Massive exhaust backfire followed by engine/turbo rattle
« on: November 05, 2014, 06:41:27 pm »
Hi guys, I was driving home when giving the car a blip in 2nd joining a dual carriage way i had a MASSIVE! exhaust backfire. being firework night at first i thought id been hit by a rocket! I saw a fair bit but not "excessive" smoke out the back and an engine knock/rattle. I limped it home as i was close and had a quick look.

No EML on the dash, nor is it missing. The smoke now seems minimal (almost like it had over fuelled) and other than the rattle seems "ok". The noise seems to be coming from the back of the engine/underneath. Any ideas of what/where to start with.

Cars a GTI with K04

Thanks

quick update to add,

just moved it from where i dumped it to outside my house and it splutters low down, only crawled up and giving it a little throttle its not happy.

The noise is more of a vibrating type knock/rattle that increases with rpm

Sorry to hear this mate, I don't think this will be a cheap fix

Sounds a lot like when James blew up his BWA engine: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,43854.msg562934.html#msg562934

Sounds like it needs looking it by a specialist  :sad1:

Done a compression test today.

1. 100psi
2. 165psi
3. 165psi
4. 165psi

So lack on compression on cylinder 1, assuming this us due to a banana shaped conrod... would have thought a damaged piston/skirt/ring/cylinder wall would yield very little compression at all?
