Need help please, rns510 firmware / canbus / VCDS guru
« on: November 12, 2014, 11:54:41 pm »
Hi.
I have upgraded my MFD2 CD Satnav to an RNS510, which I bought on ebay from Lithuania.

lets start from the beginning first, just so you know where I'm at and what have done......
Firstly I bought my first VW Golf in August this year. (2005 VW golf GTD 140 - 4motion)
I then started looking at info and the upgrade options opened a whole new world of temtation. :D

I knew I wanted to upgrade to RNS 510 so updated the canbus for a modern version
(I can't remember the part number and don't have my own VCDS to check - but it has been fitted, I watched and have the old one in my room)

I had someone upgrade the steering wheel to MK6 with buttons
I also upgraded the main controller to a 30 byte version to have cornering fogs, auto rain close, boot pop kit and other options enabled.

Now, with the original MFD2 unit, not all the steering buttons worked, I knew they ALL wouldn't and accept that but most did.
Left up/down - volume
Left left/right - next / previous track
Telephone - mute

Right up/down - MFD Menu
OK - Select

I fitted the RNS 510 and everything seemed to work fine.
Radio / maps/ media but then noticed I didn't have the Audio or Navigation options in the MFD menu

I contacted my VCDS guy who said it was just a coding issue for white display
He changed the BAP setting (for red mfd) and the missing menu's appeared :)  superb.
I drove away, went to change music to next track, using steering wheel, and the buttons wouldn't work. (gutted)

I went back and we couldn't get them to work properly.
With BAP unchecked I have full steering buttons but no audio or nav in the MFD
With BAP checked I have proper display but lack of steering control
Interestingly the buttons work fine for the first 20 seconds, and then stop.  I think as soon as the navigation initiates.
On left I only have volume up / down and mute but no track change.
On right I have the up / down / ok buttons, for the MFD menu BUT, if I select Audio or Nav they those buttons change to track change.
I then can't get back out of that screen, unless I switch radio off, highlight setup and then turn radio back on again.

I have done plenty of reading and research and this is a common problem, vastly talked about on the internet.
It appears, and I'm now under the impression, that the main culpret is hashed firmwares.
Alegedly official firmwares don't cause the problem I'm having.

I've contected the deller and asked him about this and my problem as I can only find reference to my radio having SW 6270
(although can't find anywhere to obtain this)

The unit is RNS 510 version S
Part No. 1T0035680S
HW H21
SW 6276
Map Ver. 8117

I couldn't understand how I have SW6276 if I can only find SW6270 mentioned.

The seller told me that 6276 is not official but the only firmware that enables video in motion (I'm not fussed about that)
Also the only version that will work on version S radios, which had the SSD HDD drivers.?

Been a heck of a steep learning curve for me and my head hurts.
I'm still no expert but desperate to get this problem fixed.

I think I either need to downgrade radio SW to official SW6270
or if the hashed 6276 isn't an issue, I need someoine with VCDS to make sure nothing has been over looked.

I tried to downgrade to SW5270 but about 5 minutes in I got SWL Error (010306)
This makes me believe that without a good 6xxx firmware I'm stuffed :(

My location is Redditch / Worcester and happy to travel / pay cash.
Only available evenings and weekends tho as I unfortunately have to work day time....lol

Any help would be grateful as I want to fit other upgrades but don;t want to create a rats nest of problms whilst I still have unsolved problems
I need to get this polished, ironed out and then move onto next project so if that causes problems it is isolated.

Thank you in advance.
Ady

I believe you have a variant of the same issue as me, although I have a slightly different setup; 1T0035686E HW21 SW6270 and 2005.5 MFSW. I posted the same question as you both in this forum and over at the ross-tech forum. The conclusion was that most likely our instrument clusters are too old and upgrading them isn't trivial. The C14 units has some new hardware (GPS chip, SSD disk, some have DAB/DAB+ receiver) that requires SW 6270 so I wouldn't recommend that you attempt to downgrade. Let me know if you find a solution for this as I would love to get all my buttons working as well instead of using the rocker switch :)

Yes, google has sent me many times to your posts, unfortunately I didn't ever see a reply or answer :(
I know many hashed software versions, had the same effect, on most radio models, earler than ours but the official, I think 42xx firmware had those users users smiling again.

I can't use the side rocker switch as it isn't enabled.  As a temporary 'non perfect' work around, I need it enabling :)

Yeah, temporary workaround. That's what I said as well... four months ago ;p

Have you tried to disable the "Shortpress steering wheel buttons" option in VCDS to enable the rocker switch?

Yes and no....haha
When I went straight back to the guy I know with VCDS, he scratched his head, changed some settings and asked what I wanted to do....
Either have MFD with Nav and Audio - loss of buttons OR
Have steering buttons and and lose the MFD display.

He did, whilst playing, disable or enable 'short press' and I saw him use the the side rocker switch on the wiper stalk.

When I got home, I couldn't work out how he did that so sent a TXT. asking 'how did you get the rocker switch to work.
He replied 'I changed the 'short press setting' but then put it back so it won't work unless you want it? :(    :stupid:

Rang up my local VW dealer today and spoke to service / technical.
Explained my issue and asked if they had a 6270 or latest official VW firmware for my radio.

He then told me most of what I had spoken went straight over his head and will get someone to ring me back on Monday who may know the language which I speak.....

Looks like I'm going to be spending most the weekend surfing the internet for a 6270 firmware :banghead:

Well if it's the cluster being to old there's plenty highline ones about - why not even upgrade to a white MKVI cluster from a golf plus etc

Speak to Ed he may have a cluster he'll do a deal on?

Thank you.  I can't PM anyone on here yet :(

I have the red highline display.

I would like to upgrade to the colour highline display or maybe consider white but need to upgrade the ABS unit for that to be achievable.
I also know the clocks / complete cluster needs changing and would want to stick with clocks that are standard for a Diesel engine.
An upgrade I do have in mind but not just yet, need to aquire all the parts and then do a mad fit :D
