Big Hi from Rich - 57 Black GTI 3dr
« on: November 04, 2014, 10:33:30 pm »
Evening guys and girls,

Picked up my GTI last week, enjoying it so far and has been a big step up from my Astra G 1.9cdti 150, only downside is the big decrease in MPG....but who buys a hot hatch for fuel economy?  :rolleye:

The car has full service history and according to the paperwork, had its cambelt and waterpump done at 51k, however after contacting the garage that apparently carried out the work, they have no record of this taking place, and only a minor service was done. Not sure what to do now really, have had some quotes for cambelt and waterpump replacement (around £350), but am a bit pee'd off as ive been sold the car on fault pretenses! To risk it or not.... book states like 100k for cambelt replacement but ive heard otherwise.

Already cleaned all the leathers up and they've come up a treat, have replaced wheel center caps and spent a day cleaning everything up to my OCD standards. However with a black car, it does have the inevitable swirl marks here and there, can you guys recommend any polishes or compounds that have worked well on black golf paint?

Also, as a new owner who now doesn't fully trust the cars history, is there anything major that I should check or look out for?

Cheers guys,

Rich :)

Hello and welcome.

Usual things to check are the Diverter Valve, HPFP cam follower, PCV,  if the main thermostat is sticking open so engine not running at correct temp, plus rust on the front wings at 12 o'clock position/under wing where it meets sill/tailgate handle. There are more that others will chip in with.
Usually pretty robust cars but with age they are showing up more and more common ailments.

If I was you, I would get the belt/rollers and water pump done for peace of mind. Mine is 2007 and had had its second one already.

Have a look around as there is a tonne of knowledge.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Welcome  :drinking:

I did my cam belt myself last weekend, not a horrific job but I had quotes of £500... Seems like you got a bargain!

Cheers guys,

Got it booked in tomorrow, £290 at local Vag specialist so very good price. They're going to give it a good look over too, and I might get a major service done there if they can do me a good deal.

Plans so far are:

New mats - any recommendations?
RSN510 head unit
New interior trim (center console trim is a tad tatty)
Cat Back Exhaust system - powerflow possibly
REVO Remap
Full detail and paint resto - get rid of those swirl marks as much as poss
Few small subtle interior mods

Welcome  :happy2:

Funny enough, I moved from an Astra cdti 150 to a black GTi too.

I think we both made a good choice

Oh, and get some pictures up!

Dave

Had cambelt, waterpump, aux belt, antifreeze, full service and inspection from top to bottom for £455. Not bad.
