DSG issues.... any ideas?
« on: November 13, 2014, 08:30:38 am »
Hi guys,

I am not sure where to even start searching this one  :ashamed:. The other day I noticed a smell of burnt clutch on my 2011 mk6 GTI DSG. I have noticed the gear changes are a bit weird, but hadn't really worried about them until now. Last night it hung in 3rd gear (it was in D) for longer than normal, and also when I was slowing down, it went to drop down a gear, and sounded like it slipped before going from 6th to 5th. It has 60k on the clock.

I called VW the other day about a possible clutch replacement, and I didn't even mention warranty, knowing this obviously wouldn't be covered. The service depart. said to me it would cost £140 for them to check if the clutch needed replacing and then asked if I had warranty, as I maybe able to claim off that??!! ALARM BELLS!! She also said that 60k wasn't old for a clutch to need replacing.

Also, can someone tell me how I would know if the clutch plates were on their way out?? Never having had a DSG before I am a little lost, and when I call VW I want to be ready with information!!!

Do you know if the DSG service was done at some point? Should have been done at 40k. Maybe its low on DSG fluid?

As far as I'm aware there weren't any widespread issues on the DSG from 2011. MY2008 cars had mechatronics issues due to a faulty batch and were subject to a TSB if I recall correctly, but no major faults to 2011 afaik.

The above suggestion regarding a fluid change is a good place to start - because it should be done every 4 years / 40k miles, and without it VW wouldn't even think about giving you any good will if there is a genuine fault, but it may fix the problem in the first place.

Well, I have looked through the service book and nothing states its been changed, its been "checked" but not topped up or changed, and they have never said anything to me about it, and I've had it since 3 years old with less than 40k on it when I got it!

Definitely needs to be done at 40k. VW Loughton told me about it on the phone without me even asking but I already knew about it .

I would get it done before it causes any damage.

This is worth a watch to educate you on the job required as the starting point

As above if it hasn't had the oil change its well overdue since 40k is the recommended interval. That and a DSG Reset are the first things to try.

I'm a bit dubious about the 2011 DSGs as mine had the whole gearbox replaced last year (before I bought it).

So, VW confirmed there was no comment on their system saying they had told me the DSG oil etc needed doing, although its does tell them to remind me. I questioned why hadn't I been told about it TWICE as I have had 2 services since 40k, and they said I slipped through the net.
I asked if they would do the work free of charge, and they said not really, as its down to the owner to make sure the services are kept up to date.... right, so its down to me to tell your mechanics what to do at each service?? She then asked how I new it needed doing, and I said I done my research, and found out. She then said it doesn't matter if its not done at exactly 40k.... er, its not like its a couple of thousand miles over due, its 20k over due!!!

Anyway, told them I want it done for free, as I am experiencing issues with the DSG, and if the oil change etc doesn't make a difference, then I have to pay another £140 for them to diagnose it, and they will either say they have no idea, or its not covered under warranty!! She called me back today, and said it was "checked" at 39k.

I said it wasn't, and she said according to her system it was, and if I pay for the oil to be changed, and it doesn't solve my issues, then they will look into it further.... but I have to pay!! I checked my service book, and on the date she said it was checked, there is nothing ticked under the DSG section, so as far as I am concerned its NOT be checked or changed.

Which, by the way, how do you check the DSG oil?

I am so annoyed, I can't help but think I am going to go through the same crap I went through only a year ago with a faulty DPF on my GT170.

You can't just check it. Saying that it was checked has no relevance on the fact that it has to be changed every 40k.

Take it up with VW UK. Your dealer sounds like a complete waste of time. As the car isn't in warranty, take it to a specialist who cares about the work they would do on the car.
