HID Kit, left light problems!!! :(
« on: November 15, 2014, 04:49:19 pm »
Right guys, getting a bit fed up now as some of you may have noticed with my other posts. Yet again I'm having more issues with the GTI.

Previous owner had fitted a HID kit, and the other night the left headlight failed as water got in to the HID ballast (cheap crappy kit).

So I ordered a new HID Canbus kit and began to fit it this afternoon. It initially worked, however when putting everything back together the left light completely stopped working. Checked all connections, all fuses and the power supply to the light. That side of the kit still works though as I've checked the system on another battery, so its not a problem with the kit. Right hand side still works.

For some reason there is now no 12v power supply to the unit. I don't know if there are any other fuses I've missed, if its a relay error, if its something to do with the wiring, if fault codes need to be cleared or what?!! Im really stumped :(  :chicken:

Would it be a crazy suggestion for you to try and refit the standard bulbs or uprated versions of them and see if they work as advertised?
HID kits in standard headlamps do nothing but dazzle other road users as the light pattern is scattered - one of my most disliked modifications.
If you want high intensity lighting fit xenons and the associated mechanisms so they are safe for other road users
I guess you don't have self leveling lights or headlamp washers?

Everything's set up for HIDs at the moment so just wanted to get the initial problem fixed and then maybe look in to something else in the future. Im not a massive fan of the HIDs, but its what came with the car.

Have you checked all the fuses are intact? Might have popped one when the water got in?
Might be worth a look - drivers side of the dash panel just incase any have gone?

All sorted now. :) After some hard head scratching and a lot of swearing, we traced it back to the HID kit shorting out due to some shoddy wiring within the headlight! Going to run these HIDs for a bit and if I have any further issues, revert back to standard with some bright bulbs or go for a Xenon kit.

What a relief though, the old man and me thought it may have been an issue with the main control module - more expense!
