DAB/Sat nav problems
« on: November 22, 2014, 06:59:58 am »
Morning chaps

Well...yesterday I had an Alpine INE-W987D Navi Station fitted to my '08 GTI. I've always chosen Alpines for my Golfs since the early 90's, so missing DAB I chose this model

However...

It's left me underwhelmed. Travelling to Yorkshire last night, the DAB cut out just over the border & continued to do so for 20+ miles. But my main concern is the sat nav. At times couldn't follow the route I chose & either plonked the car icon in the middle of nowhere, or directed me down some back streets, all of this whilst I was on the M62!  I know this though, it never happened with the Tom Tom.

So it's left me very underwhelmed. The fitters have stuck the DAB ariel 3/4 of the way up my front windscreen, maybe that's what's causing the lack of signal. but it's the sat nav that's my main concern.

Is it a case of changing the roof mounted ariel for something more suitable, or does the unit need a tweak? Driving home this morning, again the navigation went into a mind of it's own, directing me some wacky routes.

Help!!!!

Thanks

Adam

I fitted windscreen DAB aerial and had a lot of drop outs. Got a polo DAB aerial on roof and its much much better, waste of money those windscreen ones in poor signal regions.
How about something like this

I was thinking of a new aerial, as the old head unit was non DAB, but was Sat Nav.

I've seen the shorter aerial, more of a stubby type, will this suffice?

Cheers

If you had OEM satnav, then your current aerial might be GPS and FM. I'm not sure, it might have a GPS puck under the dash somewhere?
You could check by looking under headlining at base of aerial.
If it has GPS already (purple plug), then you will need an aerial that does both DAB (black plugs)& GPS like the one I linked.
If your aerial only does FM, then yes you could swap it for a stubby polo FM & DAB one.

I've a RNS510 DAB and fitted a cheapo windscreen antenna for my DAB reception and sorry to say, it works brilliantly! Probably because I'm in London though; out of town reception will be pants most likely...
If it's rubbish I'll go the whole hog and fit the roof mounted aerial.
Good luck with it all.

Well they came out to it today, so they've gone back to speak to Alpine to find out the right solution.

I can save them the trouble, it needs a new bleedin' aerial!

I forgot to mention that I have the OEM GPS, FM, Phone sharklfin aerial on the roof of my Ed 30, hence why I went for the separate DAB windscreen aerial. So far so good but not left London this week. Things could be very different with a poorer signal.  I'll report back soon.
