BBK and spare wheel
« on: November 23, 2014, 02:12:37 am »
I just installed TTRS brakes on to my gti, but came to think of the spare wheel clearing the calipers as recently I have had a bit of bad luck with the tyres and punctures so better be safe then sorry lol.
Anyways I tried to fit it on and as I thought so it wouldn't clear the calipers, so how do I go about this. Do the TTRS/RS3 use a different space saver wheel or?

If you had to change one of your front tyres, it would be best put the rear wheel on the front and spare on the rear...

If it's not broke, Mod it.....

I read somewhere on here that this might even be the law? Not sure how true that is but I recall a member being stopped by the police over it.

Space saver wheels are meant to be fitted to the rear, not sure if its law but it is in the handbook.

It's common sense to put the biscuit wheel on the back and your good wheel/tyre on the front where all the driving/turning/braking is being done.  Just adds 5minutes to the Job

I don't think its law, but certainly common sense. The only bit of law I know is you can't exceed 50mph with the space saver.

Would swapping your current space saver for a full size spare be an idea? Been thinking about it myself as if I ever have to use it, I'd rather a proper wheel than the space saver.

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

I absolutly agree with all the above but I had an interesting conversation with costco a little while ago when getting a new tyre fitted on my parents car. The car needed front driver side replaced so went to the counter and sorted everything out, bit of paperwork to sign and the chap said they would have to swap the rear drivers to the front so that the newest most grippy tyre was on the rear for safety!? I challenged him as it didnt make much sence to me and he said it was policy and its more important that the rears have the best grip regardless of being fwd, rwd or awd. He would not fit the new tyre unless they swapped round!? Anyhow as soon as I got the car home I swapped it so that ths newest tyre is on the front.
Iv not really explored this, I dont think the chap was being an arse but costco seem to think its the right thing to do. Any ideas to the logic cause I cant think of any

If you put the most worn tyres on the front (on a FWD) it's the quickest way to get you back to spend more money, back will the seller. This would be my thoughts and why Costco would condone it!!!!

Not sure if this is the place to ask this question but whats the thoughts on replacing spare wheel with air compressor and tyre filler kit? Obvs no need to fuss with a jack and thats case on most new new VAG cars, but whats the consequence of this?

It will do perfectly fine if you've just had a puncture and lost air but with the tyre filler kit you're buggered if you get something like a tyre blow out...

There's a fifth gear video somewhere where VBH shows why it's better to put the new tyres on the rear
