Rotational/humming noise at 80MPH
« on: April 04, 2017, 08:52:54 am »
Since I got my car last year I have noticed a slight rotational hum at 80MPH, I initially thought it was the cheap front tyres that were fitted but I have since fitted a pair of decent rubber on them and it still occurs, although not as loud.

The car only seems to make the noise at around 80, if I accelerate up to 90 it disappears and around 70 it's not there. The wheels seem to be balanced fine so I'm thinking it could be the front wheel bearings?

Sounds like either wheel bearings or uneven tyre wear.

My car was whining over 50mph and I suspected wheel bearings, turned out to be the rear tyre wear. The Mk5's love to wear the inner tyre walls on the rears so take a look there  :drinking:

Jack up the rear of the car with the handbrake off and spin the wheels.  You will hear if the bearings are shot.

You can't do the same at the front unless you remove the driveshafts first, but worn fronts tend to go quiet on corners when they are loaded up.

If the bearings are OK, could be tyres as mentioned above.   Another thing worth trying, dip the clutch to determine if it's a rotational noise or a drivetrain noise.  If DSG, I'm not sure if you can bung it in neutral at 80?! lol
