Snapped |Exhaust Camshaft
« on: December 02, 2014, 05:19:29 pm »
On the run to work today my golf gti died, upon inspection it had no compression on any cylinder, and when we took the cam cover off the exhaust cam is snapped in two.

so at a guess i will need a complete cylinder head, plus timing belt kit, plus head gasket kit.

Can anyone reccomend a good source of used cylinder heads/remanufactured

i have only just replaced the clutch, flywheel & slave cylinder so not having much luck with the car.

car is 2005 55 plate axx engine

If it helps, there have been hardly any serious failures like this mentioned on this forum since it started.

There are more on the Civic Type R forum tbh  :surprised:

Hi Mate,

Have you still got your old Intake camshaft and if so, is it any good? The sprocket on mine has cracked putting the timing out  :surprised:

Let me know,

Joe

Been on the civic type r forums for years and never seen one lol. Only time a honda engine goes is if you don't top the oil up usually.

Never seen tfsi engine go like this either right enough.

There's been quite a few on CTRO. A guy with an FN2 blew his up just accelerating onto the M62 (wasn't oil related either).

Focus ST 225s crack cylinder liners (tuned or stock) which makes the engine scrap.

The AXX TFSI engines have pretty poor camshafts, but bottom ends are stronger than BWA strangely enough. . .

Very unlucky then lol. Not saying its never happend just meaning i've not seen it over the years. I wasn't disputing what you were saying just incase it came across that wat lol.

Every engine will have its weak points just some are worse than others. And of course sometimes can be down to how well maintained it is.

the cam follower lobe on the intake camshaft is trashed, i will take some pictures of the stripped down head tomorrow and post them up, the exhaust camshaft journals are trashed, the oil gallerys were covered over by metal from either the cam or the head, loks to have probably been oil starved

@vRSAlex - Do you have spare parts needing a new home?

Failing all else, may be worth looking towards a whole engine conversion to a CDL or BHZ (or similar). These are the K04 turbo, stronger and more powerful engines, they can take some serious punishment and are found in Audi S3, Seat Leon Cupra R and ED30 GTI's (I think). You can transfer pretty much everything from your existing setup to it (so all the clutch and flywheel work can be swapped over).

What a crapper mate  :sad1: This makes me paranoid about my car being a AXX on 100K. What was the mileage when this happened and do you know if the cam follower was ever replaced?
