R32 brake upgrade issues??
« on: December 04, 2014, 08:13:38 am »
Ok just upgraded to complete r32 brake upgrade on my gt tdi2005 plate
Brand new front disks vw and new pads , calipers which look like s3 calipers as they are slightly different shape at the ends
Rear calipers refurbed by Dave b new pads , disks
Ok problem
Pedal feels very spongy
Handbrake pulls up very very high a lot higher than before
R retainers clips genuine VW don't fit the calipers( keep pinging off)
I'm not mechanically minded so got some one to do it, but not sure if the brakes will improve over time, not sure if the handbrake cable needs to be the same as the r32!?? Hence why I need to almost pull it to touch the roof, and as for the clips not sure they don't fit because the brakes are s3 calipers , but should be the same??
Any help would be apprechisted feel a little let down as I was expecting great improvement over standard brakes and don't a small fortune.

You shouldn't have a spongey brake pedal because one of the benefits of the r32 setup is pedal feel, there's a chance your brake fluid wasn't topped up? That's the only thing I can think of.

Handbrake cable again as far as I know should be fine so hopefully that's just come a bit lose when the work has been done and needs tightening back up again.

Also the clips Should be the same but I had S3 calipers and some golf R clips and by looking at them I didn't think they would fit but I was assured they would. I never fitted them because i bought some TTRS brakes so i never found out if they fit. I don't think they're sided but could be the wrong way around?

Sorry no definite answers but that's what I can think of. Hope you get it sorted soon.

If you got a spongy pedal and the handbrake is coming up high i would say the rear calipers have not been set up right. When u put the calipers over the pads in the carrier you got to make sure its a tight fit by winding the piston of the caliper out to meet the pad so the brake is almost binding on.

The clips do fit s3 calipers but they are a pain to get on and come off with some force, so be careful :)
They're not sided.
The only difference with s3 calipers is one of the brackets needs removing from the outer brake pad, if fitting r32 pads to s3 calipers.
I'll dig out a pic...
