Sluggish first start of the day
« on: November 29, 2014, 03:40:50 pm »
Every time I start my car for first time in the day (morning afternoon or evening) it seems to struggle to start up smoothly! It's been doing it since iv owned the car and never thought anything of it. It's not weather dependent as it does it in the cold and warm!

As soon as iv started it once it starts perfectly everytime unless been sat still for 12 hours ish.

I Thinking maybe something to do with battery but am unsure

Is the engine slow to turn over? If so its probably the battery. If the car sort of stumbles into life and takes a few cranks, see here:

I found that running some BG44k injector cleaner through mine has made it jump into life rather than stumble. It's been great for 3months since I treated it

Mine was doing the same. Changed the battery and hasn't done it since. Again this happened summer and winter months.

If you don't want to splash out for a be new one. Try someone else's first

Are you depressing the clutch and holding it in the depressed position as you start the car? Puts less strain on the starter motor that way and is the correct way to start a manual car.

Never knew that, makes sense as modern cars won't start until you depress the clutch.

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

When you start with the clutch pedal pressed down it stops all the extra gubbins in the gearbox being spun round when starting the engine, so puts less strain on the starter motor.

Taylor I have the same problem on my Leon FR with DSG.
You should read the thread that Gray posted.
I think that this issue is fuel related, try and prime the low pressure pump few times before cranking the car. It helps on my car.

What 56OctyVRS said is the reason plus it's in the instruction manual for your car as second source of recommendation   :happy2:
