head unit upgrade?
« on: December 05, 2014, 03:43:20 pm »
so im getting a headache trying to fix the satnav syndrome. cant get disks to burn because laptop keeps killing them.

I also want to add in a subwoofer to the sound system.

So theres 2 issues there, no satnav and no sub output.

Can anyone recommend a touch screen double din stereo unit that has all the features of the stock stereo (i.e satnav, sd card, fm or dab radio) that comes with all the shiznit needed to go into it and DOESNT use your mobile data for the gps/satnav and has a sub output?

it really must have an sd slot though and satnav without mobile data. i spent 4 days organising and converting music to a 32gb sd card, damned if im going to waste that time haha.

I have amp and sub linked to RNS-510. You will need a line out converter. The amp i have has a built in converter.

im not overly technical with car stereos so the whole line converter things just go over my head, thats where its easier to link to whats needed rather than try to explain it if that makes sense?

are there any walk throughs around for doing it? im quite content to follow a good guide  :happy2:
those amps are easily available on ebay and such so thats not an issue.

Other thing is, where did you run your power cable into the car from the battery? i had a look and it seems as though thats going to be awkward haha.

is this the line converter you speak of?

http://www.thatcable.com/product/Speaker-Output-to-RCA-Converter-High-to-Low-Line-Level?gclid=CjwKEAiAzIWkBRDO5LDEn8G1nAUSJADnHq_5lyXnKJqX9QdebE2I4mAn1t7Xg0Y_nG7w8AHGJjWTChoCwN7w_wcB

and where you say the amp has one built in, does that mean the speaker cables from the head unit just need the extra lines to the amp splicing into them? (taking the, say, front speaker cables, and splicing additional cables into them?) cause it goes from strand core to RCA required plugs...

Yes to both.

That is a line out converter.

With my amp i spliced into the speaker wires and plugged them directly into the amp.

thanks, i think im going to wire the LOC's into the rear of the unit and hide them away there or possibly in the glove compartment. In the mean time i shall begin with the joyous task of running the positive and RCA cables through to the front of the car.

The amp will be situated in the boot, so im guessing it needs a remote on power source, i.e tie that into the positive of the boots 12v outlet?

It may be easier to put the amp under one of the front seats then you only have to run the speaker wire to the boot.

Here is mine i was happy with how it turned out considering it was my first attempt at something like this.

I originally connected the remote to the front 12v outlet but then realised it was on all the time. In the end i spliced onto the power wire for my parrot blue tooth.

Check the rear socket first it may be wired from the ignition.

might be dumb, but i might get a signal amplifier, something that takes a few volts and turns it into a 12v signal and tie that into one of the speaker lines and the amps remote. then it only comes on with the stereo.

where abouts is the stock crossover located on the 5 door 2l gti? my new speakers came with their own so going to tie those in before the stock crossover, assuming it does actually have one that is.

the crossover question was retarded.

something to make you all laugh though, following a guide for amplifier wiring install, i got a sub with a built in amp so had to run it from the boot, ran the power cables along the drivers side of the car, following this guide. didnt realise its a sodding US car so the grommet i was looking for is on the other side.

Good times.

Is there a place on the UK drivers side that the power cable can go through? Seen something about a grommet under the rain gutter? obviously this will need some silicone if the power cable can go through there. i've got it ran up to the fuse box on the side of the drivers dash so far.

anyone know what wires in the doors are for the speaker feeds? i.e which color wires go into the crossovers? i need to pull the cross overs out and tie the new speaker feed cables into the existing ones.
