Xenons pointing really low to the ground
« on: December 06, 2014, 06:23:00 pm »
Need some help/advice.

Just nipped out and realised whilst driving my xenon headlights are pointing really low to the floor. To the point where I almost cannot see the beam infront of me.

They were fine last night and always have been a perfect height (to the point other people sometimes flash me) assuming they were quite high.

Anyone know what may of caused this and any ideas on how to get them back to normal as its really bugging me.

Is is just a simple case of re-adjusting them via the Allen key back to the old height?

They should self level when you start the car are they not doing that?

there's a unit at the rear that lowers the lights if your loaded up to stop them pointing skywards could be the spring/lever has become detached making the lights think you've got half a house in the back and pointing the lights down , check if you can see anything hanging down

Happened to mine once..they were still trying to level themselves sweeping from very low to low. Never found what the issue was..& didn't have time to fully investigate so just got a dealer reset which sorted it and no issues since.

Mine were the same after fitting the Eibach Lowering Springs - quick adjustment on VagCom and all was rosy again!

I fitted an aftermarket rear arb last night so that may of upset it? Had the back end jacked up for about an hour or two.

I've adjusted them via the Allen key now so will keep my eye on it over the next few days and make sure they go back to the 'correct height' they originally were. Locked and unlocked the car, started it and they're sitting fine now.

Thanks for your help guys :happy2:

This was exactly what mine was doing. Glad to hear it's not a major issue and easily solved :notworthy:

Exactly what mine has recently done, been under the car to check the leveling mechanisms front and rear and all seems fine but lights were on floor and not adjusting when unlocking car and switching lights on etc!

Took car to local Mot friend and had him manually set the levels using the 6mm plastic Allen head adjusters on the actual headlight units and all has been fine since except the lights no longer try to auto level! No fault codes found though with friends vagcom and i can see at night so think il just leave it well alone

Unless anyone has any suggestions as to what could be wrong?

Before mine were reset and adjusted through VAGCOM they were very low and didnt even attempt to adjust themselves before starting.
After hooking them upto the computer they work properly now - the garage that checked and adjusted them said it was fairly common for it to happen after lowering.

Happened on my car when I got it lowered as the mechanic broke the bolt for the sensor and put a cable tie on it without telling me  :fighting: but they didn't go back to the same after so just took it to an m.o.t garage and he adjusted it on the lights

I read once of a member jacking his car up for some maintenance. The self levelling switch for the headlights flipped 180degrees as the car had been lowered down producing this issue......I believe he jacked it back up, flipped the switch and all was right with the world again!
When I retrofitted them to my Golf last year, there were only 2 switches, one on the front and one on the rear but both were on the nearside.
Oh, and new ones cost a small fortune!!!!

As said above ^^^ one of your levelling switches will have went past bottom dead centre and will be trying to move out of the operable range..

This happened to mine after jacking up once, and was confirmed when I plugged in Vagcom to see the sensors' value was something like -23 rather than 0 - 100 for example.

Best thing to do is jack up the car on the corner where the affected sensor is, and carefully pull it past its' lowest point, back into the operating range  :happy2:

p.s. you may need to delete the fault code before the headlights return to normal operation.
