RNS 510 connection to Android phone
« on: December 12, 2014, 10:15:19 am »
Morning all,

I am new and very excited to be here - bought my first GTi on Wednesday, a very beautiful dark blue 2008 5-door with pretty much all mod cons.  Am deliriously happy with it and falling more in love with it by the minute.

But there is always a 'but'.

The car had the sat nav upgraded by the previous owner to an RNS510 unit which is ace, but he seems to have chosen the non-bluetooth version.  There is an Apple 30-pin connector in the arm rest which I haven't tried but suspect is disconnected as there is a second MDI connector in the glove box.  I have tested this with the wife's iPhone and it works fine BUT I am an Android man and have a Galaxy Note 3 with oodles of music on it...which I can't play.

Using the MDI cable in the glove box I've tried the following:
- connecting a bluetooth receiver that I normally use with my Bose sounddock but this did not work
- connecting a "Cablejive" apple-to-android lead that I used to use with my Bose sounddock; this was nearly successful as if I turn both phone and head unit up to max you can hear the music but it's very distant, almost inaudible and tinny-sounding so not a go-er.  So close!
- broadcasting from my phone using a Kensington FM transmitter but the radio couldn't find the signal.

So all in all I am a bit stuck.  I could put the music on an SD card but would rather use my phone.  Can anyone help?  Having just spent quite a lot of money buying the car I'm keen to avoid having to spend lots more money obviously!

Any assistance very gratefully received.

Big thanks in advance...

Theres isnt a bluetooth version of the RNS 510 as such mate, to get bluetooth functionality (plus a few other goodies) it would be best to get fiscon basic +, a quick search will yield many results :D
