New Car or not? Advice needed :)
« on: December 12, 2014, 01:01:16 pm »
Alright guys need abit of advice! Had my edition 30 almost 2 years now:

Had it tuned to 330 bhp at Rtech. It has:
Full Miltek sports cat exhaust
ITG Induction kit
THS Intercooler
Lowered on eibachs
Stage 2 custom map
Stage 2 custom DSG Map.

I mean this car is awesome, never goes wrong performs flawlessly, super fast... But I still feel abit bored, 2 years seems a long time to own a car to me and I feel like I need a change.. but I dont want to regret selling it, I've been looking for a while and I cant find anything on the same level as the golf which isnt alot more money.. Need advice guys shall I stick with the golf or can anyone make some car suggestions I can look into, bear in mind I have a 1 year old and 2 dogs so I need room for a car seat and a hatchback style boot.

I've had a look at S3s and scricco R's but at the end of the day its the same engine as what I have.. What am I getting extra for my money?

Cheers, sorry for the rant.

You will struggle to beat the ED30 , having had one for 3 years i had £20-£25k to spend on a replacement and could not see anything that was a truly better , rather than  just being newer . Fortunately i had a change of circumstances ... I retired and needed a "Tow" Car so bought a Freelander 2 !
As you say the engine is the same in S3 and R so you are already looking at it how i did , thought about an RS3 but they are a bit , just like an spiced up S3 , the engine was the only plus , but you can't use what you've got now can you ?

Only car i would trade an ED30 for would be a 7R , but thats £30k , but there's one on the R forum for sale .

Totally agree with the above, these cars are very good and anything worth getting over them is a lot more money, RS4 / C63 etc.. But thats another league of car. New MK7 R is about the only comparable thing and there 30k+

I can't help but thing RS4/C63 would be a nightmare on running costs compare to my ED30. I get 30-35mpg on a good day and other factors are still reasonable. I love the engine in the mk7 R but the look put me right off, not a fan :( I'm too picky!

Did you look at the Focus RS? again I think its similar power and a worse interior :/ My power delivery is pretty good tbh in dry conditions, R-tech did a really good job making the power as linear as possible.

@Trunkstuff that's the exact problem, you can buy some mega cars for 25k but they cost 70k car money to run them.

For something that has similar power/ practicality/ running costs of the ED30 you're just paying a 5 - 10k premium for something a few years newer and maybe 4WD.

Yeah I understand what you mean. The ED30 has such great value for money only thing it lacks really is 4WD :(

I really really like them and the 135i but the arn't sutible for dogs because of the closed off saloon style boot :(

Sounds like you're just bored rather than need a better car.

Maybe you should buy a toy to amuse yourself, B5 S4/ Modify an old Cupra R/ S3.

I'm not sure I've got the will power to mod it anymore :P Only thing I'd want is better brakes and an interior touchscreen display.

Yeah it is just boredom there is nothing wrong with my car it fits my lifestyle perfectly lol I thought about buying an R32 for something abit different. You dont get V6 hatchbacks anymore.

I am 51 , being in a Focus RS would not look right  :happy2:
I thought of Audi S4 Avant in the Blue , also an RS4 but a bit old looking and horrendous on fuel and running costs .
I am not really into huge power outputs , but all the best looking cars (and mine spend most of their time stationary so thats important) have huge engines/power to fit the image .
I am also put off £500 VED on some of the cars .... Yeah i know its only £40pm
So my next task is to try and persuade my Wife out of her Mini , but she loves it and she's called Minnie too .
