Rear Wheel Bearing

I've just taken my newly acquired 2005 GTi to my mechanic mate to listen to what I thought might be a rear wheel bearing issue and sure enough when it's on a jack with the wheel spinning, there is a noise coming from the drivers side rear bearing. My mate doesn't have a lot of experience with VW's (he's an Alfa specialist) but can I get away with just replacing the bearing or will it need a whole new hub? The noise isn't terrible but definitely noticeable. If I carry on driving the car like this, will it cause any serious damage?

The complete hub needs to be replaced...I've done both of the rears on mine. I used these:

it's a hub needed bud, not sure you could buy just the bearing, really good to do, remove rear caliper and brake pads, and the brake disc can come off, then remove the hub dust cap, then undo the spline hub bolt and the hub can come off, that spline hub bolt is a specialist tool though and really tight, once you've got the hub off, have a close look at the abs sensor and make sure the inner rubber part of the hub hasn't been fowling the sensor and wearing it away (common problem)then re-fit the new hub, last one i got was about £35.00 from dmfx in darlington.

Either get one OEM (more expensive) or one from SKF like ROH ECHT suggested. :)

You can replace just one, but if you're obsessive with your Golf you can replace both.

as stated it comes as a complete hub

The axle bolt is the real challenge with this job...need the proper 12 point(18mm I believe) and torque for new bolts is 180 Nm + 180° more.

Whole hub unit gets replaced, I've never had to do one before, think the part price is around the £95-100 mark, paid £160ish from VW couple of months ago.
