Bouncing Tailgate.....
« on: November 18, 2009, 09:51:01 pm »
Has anyone ever experienced the boot lid making a noise when you go over a reasonable bump? I've some sort of noise which sounds like the boot lid isn't shut right but I've repeatedly checked it and I've removed everything from the boot itself but its still doing it?

Still under warranty? If so drop it into VW dealer.

Could be the little adjusters not quite being set right. There are two little black knobs which you can turn to affect how fully the bootlid shuts against the car.

Its out of warranty unfortunately. These little black adjuster things? Do you mean the rubber bump stop things? I'd not thought of that so I'll give em a go mate. Cheers.

Before you try it, have a brainstorm as to if it could be anything else? For example the spare wheel not locked in properly?? Or something underneath the spare wheel, I'd suggest taking this out as a first port of call.

Yes, on the tail gate (not the car itself). You will notice that they have a hexaganol base to them so that a spanner can go round them. Just make sure you take your time and do it evenly. I would suggest reaching a point where the boot will not close properly then to just slacken both of them off just enough so that it closes.

But first I would just see if there is any movement in the bootlid. Try pushing the lid down when its in a closed position. If it needs adjustment I think you would see movement.

Noises coming from the rear of a car can be a number of things.

My past experiences not to jump to conclusions, I've had in the past:

- After fitting new dampers and springs the shockers were not set right in their mounts. Shocker collars were smacking the mounts on the car (ooops).

- Parcel Shelf loose

- Bootlid bump stops not correctly adjusted (there was obvious movement in the boot lid)

It does seem to move ever so slightly when I pushed it whilst it was shut. I've taken everything out of the spare wheel compartment but I'll try all the suggestions tomorrow and see if I get anywhere.  :happy2:

I've got the same problem BM. It's mild but noticeable.

Let me now how you get on and I'll try the suggestions too  :happy2:

Isn't this noise down to the rear seat back rattling on the catches??

^ More subtle than that Oli. I know what you mean as my hard-tail fits in the back with the rear seats down and have left them loose before, but the one BM describes is not quite as loud or deep as that.

I've checked the seat catches and there appears to be no movement at all inn this department. I've rechecked the spare wheel and everything is seated nice and tightly with nothing loose to rattle about. When I looked at the little rubber bump stops thingymajigs i noticed that one was protruding quite a bit more than the other so I've adjusted them to the same length. Having looked through the gap where the rubber bits sit I can see they are both compressed and look like there set right. I haven't noticed it since but there is a still a tiny bit of movement if I push the boot lid when its shut? It appears to be the catch/pin bit for the boot lock that is on the car rather than the boot lid that is moving a bit. There are two bolts which I'd like to tighten up but there under a little plastic flap so I can't. How do I remove the inner trim part so that I can get to it?
