Boot gas powered strut
« on: December 21, 2014, 12:01:04 pm »
Last night the gas powered hydraulic strut that holds the boot up when you open it gave way.  Great timing in the middle of a rain shower!  Managed to get it folded down enough to close it in order to shut the boot.

Looks like it is about £15 for a new strut but it appears to have sheered right off where it joins to the side of the car body so I think it would need a rivet put on from inside the car to hold a new one on.  Has anyone else came across this before and fixed it?

Thanks!

A boot strut on my GTI failed earlier this year, I replaced it with this:

http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Volkswagen_Golf_2.0_2008/p/car-parts/car-body-parts-and-car-exhaust/body-shop/bonnet-strut-and-tailgate-strut/?859440951&1&bd4da32e3f7becc6183dfd676bfc926306ea5351&000413

Buy online and collect in store, cheaper than just walking in. Can you get a picture of the damaged area in question, sounds more like the mounting point than the strut has failed which is odd. I only had to prise the strut off the mounting points and fit the new one in it's place, all bodywork fittings were fine.

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

Thanks guys for the response.  I've booked it in at my local indie to get it sorted early new year as looks like it will need to get a rivet on it from the inside of the car to remount the bolt the strut normally sits on (its this part that has failed / sheered off.  Can't no pics unfortunately as it took me a good 30mins in the pouring rain to get it closed so don't want to risk it.  At least it didn't fall on my head!

Looks like an easy one to replace if it is only the strut you need.

Let's hope it is just the gas strut. Someone on here was selling all 3 for £5 which is a bargain.
