RNS510 Noise?
« on: December 25, 2014, 06:18:56 pm »
Evening All,

I fitted my RNS today and all is well but I noticed that when the engine is off I can hear a slight buzzing noise from the unit itself; either the hard drive or cooling fan.

I have a new CAN Gateway so I hope this won't cause the battery drain issue but when I tried to start my car it did struggle, although managed to start.

Is this something to be concerned about or could it have just been a cold start issue and a coincidence!?

I've logged details of my unit below.

Thanks all, and Merry Christmas.

It has an Econ panel so I'd say 2006 or older, will suffer gateway drain in the interim unless it has previously been swapped out.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Hi,

I had a new gateway from Eddie installed to prevent drain. I'm hoping I start the car tomorrow fine, just concerned that something is active whilst the car is stationery and not live.

The rns normally does stay on for a bit when the car is switched off,but eventually the unit will switch off completely.

I'm pretty sure it lasted around 3 hours!

I'll soon find out if it's worth worrying about tomorrow.

I seem to recall last time I changed the hard drive in these that they have a small cooling fan that runs on for a while after the ignition is off

the fan normally stays on for around 5 mins max after ignition off. 3 hours isn't the norm.

It's the faintest noise and can only be heard when you put your ear to the unit, seems I was getting ahead of myself with the OCD!
