According to VW 1L per 1000miles is acceptable, any more and they consider investigating...

Gonna hijack this thread.
Just had my oil level light flash up to me on my dash ... I must have done absolute max. 2000 miles since putting 4 litres of the castrol 5w30 oil in. Its all gone already.

Now I know these cars guzzle oil ... but I'm fairly certain that is not normal consumption.

There is no oil leaking underneath the car. Does anyone have any ideas on the likely cause of consuming this much oil so quickly?

It's probably not all gone.   It's a litre between the Min and Max marks on the dip stick so I'd say youve used just over a litre if the light has come on.

Has this oil consumption come on all of a sudden, or is the car new to you?

Well, I bought the car end of April last year, and I think if memory serves me well, it was MOT'd then, so should have an oil top up. Then middle of September all the oil had gone. And I mean all of it.

So think it has been like it for a while now. I just assumed they hadnt put much oil in at the time of MOT

What does an MOT have to do with your oil level? There's no reason for them to top up your oil, it's not a service, it's an inspection of the car to conform to UK standards. The onus is on you to check your oil level.

Btw, 2000 miles is perfectly normal for 1 litre to be consumed. It's a turbo engine with 100bhp per litre and it's driven hard.

Nothing, but I'm sure I remember the guy I bought if off saying he topped up the oil for me at the time they did the MOT on the car.

And it's not 1 litre I've got through .... It's 4 litres in 2000 miles.

4 litres in 2000 miles? That does sound excessive.

What sort of driving do you do?

Changing your oil grade can make a big difference to consumption. Ask OPIE oils for a recommendation.

Like 12 miles a day to and from work. Little bit of social driving. Don't very often have to do long journeys this time of year.

Soooo just got back from the garage, as I took it in for them to get up on a ramp and see if I have an oil leak.
Following the excess usage mentioned above.

Nothing out of the ordinary seems to be wrong though  :stupid:

Engine bay is dry, no oil leaks in the bay
Disconnected boost pipe, and nothing out of the ordinary there either
Doesn't appear to be any excess oil residue in the exhaust tips either

Breathing a bit heavy when quickly unscrewed oil cap with it ticking over
But nothing to worry about

Disconnected engine breather pipe, which had a little bit of oil there, but again, nothing excessive.

Sooo bit lost on what the issue is to be honest.
Going to go back Tuesday night, tracking how many miles I've done
Put 2 litres of oil in, so will see how much is left when I go back Tuesday.

Anyone got any other suggestions to check?

Are you putting in 2 litres in one go? The dipstick reads the final litre, so with the overall oil capacity of the engine at around 4.8 litres, it's reading from 3.8 to 4.8 litres.

So if you put in 2 litres when it's at the minimum on the dipstick, your now at 5.8 litres; I.e., overfilled.

Did the dipstick test, was not showing at all on the dipstick any oil after wiping it clean

2 litres has put it just above the minimum marker.

Not meaning to sound rude here, but are you sure your reading the dipstick correctly? Needing two litres to get to the minimum sounds like you've been running dangerously low on oil.

Have a full oil change to know that it's got the right amount of oil to begin with. Seems like your playing catch up with the oil level.
