5w 40 fully synthetic oil..
« on: January 04, 2015, 10:16:24 pm »
Would there be any reason why you couldn't use 5w40 fully synthetic oil in an Edition30?

A lot of people including myself move to 5W40 fully synthetic oil once running higher power levels. No reason not to use it.
Golf R gone.

Full synthetic will withstand higher operating temperatures in the engine itself for longer, and opting for 5w-40 over 5w-30 further aids this. I've also made the switch to 5w-40 fully synthetic oil.

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

VW 504/507 approved oil is one grade only, 5w30.
5w40 is thicker at temperature, by how much I have no idea.

Make up your own mind.

Depends on the oil, if you look at the datasheets they give the viscosity at a given temperature. Quantum 5w40 is only marginally thicker than Castrol 5w30 at 100 degrees from memory

I was lead to believe that although 5w-40 isn't VW spec, when running any level of tune the excess heat generated in the engine is controlled by the thicker oil. Certainly my engine feels smoother when running it through the upper rev range at temperature.

I'm good...thanks  :happy2:
Some here use 0w40 or even 0w30 in the colder states...but most here use 0w40 or 5w40.
If it is VW 502.00 and 505.00 coded.
