rns510 flush fit?
« on: November 20, 2009, 06:40:44 pm »
hi all,

just recieved and installed my rns510, was quick and easy to install as expected, however...it doesnt sit flush with the dash trim as my rcd300 did, is this the norm or have I not fitted it correctly??!

cheers

It should be perfectly flush. Make sure the GPS antenna and the harness aren't trapped in such a way to cause protrusion.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Ive had this before the touareg unit is a little bit deeper and some times the front is switched for the golf version, and it makes the front protrude very slightly...can you check the part number ontop of the unit if it starts 7L6 then its a touareg unit with a golf front.

No difference in units it just makes it stick ot abit

Cheers for the heads up mate,

I've had it out and the part number starts with '1TO'

I had a look at the frame where the unit actually screws to the dash and 3 of the 4 lugs look a little bent... and the fascia of the unit a tiny bit loose. Its a lithuanian ebay purchase so is there a potential the front has been damaged/repaired? if so do i need to worry about it? also would it be advisable to bend the lugs slightly to try and correct it?

Cheers

worth a try bud, just be careful and do it slowly, glad to see you didn't have an hybrid unit.

cool cheers for that, i'll have a go on the weekend so i dont have to rush it!!

if it has had a new screen/fascia is it likely to cause grief later on.....i.e when the 30 day warranty has expired!

one last question, ive fitted it to my 55 plate gti, do i need any coding done, everything works as it should. (i havent got plans to retro mfsw or highline)

should be fine if you've not got mfsw or highline but the gps tracking might lag abit,  when you lose a gps signal your nav is dependant on the abs sensors on the back wheels like in a tunnel or thick trees, if your nav is not coded into the can gateway the nav unit cannot take the readings from the wheel sensors.

I'm having my RCD300 replaced with a RNS510 tomorrow. Having the VWMD fit it in case there's any issues. Got mine via Ebay too but from a local guy who had it in his Seat. It's a VW unit so fingers crossed.
VW Golf Edition 30, Candy White, 3dr Manual. Plus a stunning Aston Martin V12 Vantage!
