RNS510 tone compared with RCD300
« on: November 21, 2009, 07:21:40 pm »
Hi all, feel a bit of a fool writing this but I'm feeling a little let down by the bass response from my RNS510.   I will give you a little backround before you all castigate me !  Back in April I sold my 06 5dr GTI with an RCD300 . Now, I was happy with the sound and the bass although I did have the bass / treble set quite high (I listen to a lot of dance/ electronic music along the lines of Simian Mobile Disco etc. ).
I have just bought an 08  3dr Ed30 with the RNS510 but ,no matter which combination of bass/mid/treble, I feel I can't replicate the sound of my previous GTI.  None of the cars had the soundpack btw.
Am I missing something out here ?  I thought it may be the 5dr was better because the speakers were housed in a smaller door hence less air volume around them.
Anyone else made the change and feel the same as me ?

Was the RNS factory fitted in your ED30?

Reason I ask is because it could be incorrectly coded if not as I have found the sound of my RNS510 in my ED30 far far better than the RCD300 in my old 05 plate GTI

Early GTIs came with a 10 speaker sound system (three in each of the front doors).  Maybe your 06 plate car had that?

RNS was factory fitted.   Yes , my 06 had 10 speakers ( 3 in ea front door and 2 in ea rear) but ,as far as I can see , the ed30 is the same.
It has got a Bury bluetooth kit which comes through the factory speakers. I am assuming there is an in-line adapter which links in to the speaker plug on the RNS ?   I can't imagine this making a difference though.

they started cost cutting 06 onwards so maybe cheaper speakers? not 3 in each door? maybe you remember it being better than it actually was?(long shot)

^^^ Factory fitted RNS510's will also have 10 speakers (mine 08 ED30 does)  :happy2:

What is the standard speaker setup for the Ed30?  Is it still ten?

Depends, RCD300 = 8 / RCD500 = 10 IIRC  :happy2:

Does the speaker on top of the centre console prove you have 8 or 10 speakers?

^^^ Thats an air vent not a speaker  :happy2:

It's three speakers rather than two in each of the front door that's the difference between the 8 and 10 speakers setups.

Hi all, thanks for the comments.  I had a chance today to listen to a colleagues 3dr GTI ( 2005 ) with the RCD300 and no soundpack. Has  the 10 speaker system and sounded a lot bassier than mine. Sounds as if you have a small sub in there !  For continuity I have been using two CDs . Immaculate collection - Madonna and Daft Punk - Discovery.  The punch and bassline on Holiday was way way better on the RCD300 and so was DPs Voyager.
This is pointing towards a speaker issue I think. Is there any way of checking connections and performance with Vag-com ?

I noticed the same thing.
Had the rcd in my gt sport, and a factory fitted rns510 in my pirelli.

RNS doesn't come close in a bass sense.
There are some hidden menus you can check out depending on which firmware you are running.
iirc, this worked for me, but didn't help with my sound in the end:
http://www.my-gti.com/1078/entering-setup-on-the-rns-510-with-recent-firmware

to me it feels like the 'loud' button you find on other stereos has been turned off.

I believe a factory fitted rns means you dont get the amp under the passenger seat that you do get in a standard gti (at least that is the case here in oz). Check under your passenger seat, then your mate's.

This is exactly the problem. Glad I'm not the only one ! Neither mine or my mates have the soundpack amp. Maybe I need it then !!  Gonna try and get to listen to another RNS510 to compare like for like.  Someone in another thread on here mentioned that if the headunit is coded for the soundpack then the speaker outputs will be different than if it were just the 10 speaker system.

I've just swapped my RCD300 to a RNS510 and thought the sound quality much better.
