GT TDI Turbo Help
« on: January 15, 2015, 12:06:10 am »
OK, cars come back from a FULL service today along was a few other things. Biggest shock £100 plus for a f**king door mirror  :surprised: :jumping

Anyway, shock aside they have said my turbo has a whistle/whine - and advised me that I would need to get this looked at. So can you knowledgeable folk tell me this:

Car is 2004 MK5 GT Tdi

1. Is this turbo specific to the TDI or is it the same as the one on GTi etc?
2. Is it best to have a company rebuild my turbo?
3. Buy a second hand turbo?
4. Look at a new hybrid turbo? (believe this is where the extra power is)
5. Other?

Thank you

Hi the gti & gt tdi are different turbos - I've just had mine rebuilt cost £260 by a decent company using genuine parts, darkside quoted me £2k for hybrid but involves other stuff inc remap to get the best results.

Be careful if you go the rebuild route as a lot of companies use cheap Chinese parts & they don't last plus id avoid the second hand stuff unless you know the car it came off.

Remember best to replace the turbo oil feed pipe or your new parts may not last!

When people say the turbo is making a noise and on its way out.....what PART(S) are the actually referring to? bearings? seals? the casing itself?

The turbo on mine is getting pretty noisy too, makes a noise like a siren near enough all the time!
How hard can it be?

It's not a good sign......if they blow the cost can be silly. Been advised to get it looked at sooner...than later

There are one/twp of these on eBay, they also require your old unit in exchange. These are good prices but seem way to cheap....to cheap and too good to be true.

Anyone comment?

Also, what is the main different between std and hybrid?

Not confident enough to do it myself mate, just strange that they offer something for £300 when most are twice the price....just seem too cheap/good to be true.

If I did change the it, should I go hybrid....more expensive but is it worth it

The hybrid route is worth it but it's lot to change ie
  full exhaust with out cat
custom remap
intercooler but only noticeable in warm weather
most important you need to do the brakes
